Another child of Hiram Smith & Phebe Ann Smith was Jennie Mathera Smith.  She married her sister-in-law's brother, Merritt N Philo, a son of Nehemiah Philo & Jane Ann Bancus.  They had 2 sons, yet both died unmarried.

The death of Merritt N Philo occurred yesterday afternoon at his home in Halfmoon where he was born 72 years ago and resided all his life.  He was a Deacon of the first Baptist Church of that place.  Surviving are a son, Wellington S Philo; a brother, Basil Philo and several nephews and nieces.  The funeral will be conducted Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the First Baptist Church.  Burial will be in Union Cemetery, Crescent.

Thursday afternoon, Jul 13, occurred the death of Jennie Smith, beloved wife of Merritt Philo, after a long illness. Mrs Philo received a stroke of paralysis about two years ago in Frear's Dry Goods Store and has been in poor health since that time. She was a consistent member of the Halfmoon Baptist Church and was highly esteemed by all who knew her. She is survived by her husband and one son, Wellington Philo, who have the heartfelt sympathy of their many friends. Her funeral was largely attended from her late residence Sunday afternoon. Rev F P Osborn officiated. Interment took place in the Crescent Union Cemetery, the following acting as bears: Ellis M Faulkner, Byron Wetsel, Irving L Taylor and Chas H Rice.

Wellington Philo Dies Suddenly At Halfmoon Home

Body Found on Kitchen Floor; Had Suffered from Heart Ailment

Wellington S Philo, 58, was found dead on the kitchen floor of his home in Halfmoon about 8 pm yesterday. He lived alone. Philo had not been seen since about noon Monday.  Neighbors looking through a window discovered him on the floor. They notified State Police of the Newtonville outpost of Troop G.  Dr A W Johnson, Saratoga County Coroner, and Dr G W Crissey of Mechanicville, coroner's physician,, were summoned. Mr Philo, it is believe, had been dead about ten hours. The body was taken to the Hack funeral parlors at Mechanicville where an autopsy will be performed to determine the cause of death. State Police notified Mrs Mary Philo, RD 2, Mechanicville, an aunt of Mr Philo, of his death.  Following an autopsy, Dr Johnson said death was due to a heart attack and hardening of the coronary arteries.

Saturday evening, Feb 29, occurred the death of Herbert Philo, youngest son of Mr and Mrs Merritt N Philo in his 21st year of typhoid fever. Herbert was a genial, whole-souled fellow and was a great favorite among his young associates, and his death has cast a gloom over the whole village. He is survived by his parents and one brother, Wellington Philo, who in their great sorrow have the sympathy of the whole community. The funeral was held the following Tuesday afternoon at his parents' residence and was largely attended. Rev E E Manning officiated.  The choir consisting of Rev E E Manning, George Dunham, Miss Alice Manning and Miss Ethel Walker, sang, "Asleep in Jesus," "Under his Wing" and "Face to Face." Interment took place at Crescent. The large number of floral pieces peak of the high esteem in which he was held.
