Peter Johnson Smith

Peter Johnson Smith was the son of Platt Smith & Margaret Johnson and was born in 1819 at Halfmoon.  He married twice, first the mother of his children, Minerva Morris who died in 1863; then he married widow Edna Edmonds (nee Schouten).

Of his children, Hiel Johnson Smith died at age 13 and an infant son died in 1861.  Mary Jane married John Baker and she named her son after her brother Hiel.  She died in 1929.

Peter Smith, one of the best known and most highly esteemed residents of the town of Halfmoon, died of paralysis at his home near this village, Tuesday afternoon.  Deceased was 78 years of age, and had lived on his farm since 1842.  He is survived by one daughter, Mrs John Baker, and by a brother and sister, John I Smith and Mrs Peter Althouse.  The funeral took place yesterday.
