Wright Butler


Rhuemma Wright married Odell Corning Butler, the son of the Rev Dr Stephen Wright Butler & Hannah Lamira Odell.  Odell & Rhuemma had 2 boys - Melville C & Wilson W.

Odell Butler is Dead Here - Son of Rev Butler Succumbs Here - Ill Many Weeks - Was Lifelong Resident of Dutchess
Odell Corning Butler of 7 Innis Avenue died yesterday after an illness of several weeks of pneumonia. He was 54 years old and a resident of Dutchess County for many years. Mr Butler was born in Fall River, Mass, the son of the Rev Dr S Wright Butler and Hannah Odell Butler. He spent his early life in Dutchess County and was educated at local schools and the DeGarmo Institute in Beacon. He lived with relatives in the Town of Union Vale where he owned a large farm. In 1903 Mr Butler moved to Poughkeepsie and had lived here since. Surviving him are his wife, who was Miss Rhuemma Wright; two sons, Melville and Wilson Wright Butler; his father and a sister, Mrs Norman Deyo. He was a member of one of the oldest and most distinguished families in the county and was connected by birth and marriage with most of the best known residents of this vicinity. He was a member of Trinity ME Church. Funeral services will be held at Trinity Church, Thursday afternoon at 230 o'clock. The Rev DR J Lewis Hartsock will officiate. Interment will be in the Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery in the charge of A A Schoonmaker.

Mrs Rhuemma Wright Butler, 77, died yesterday in her home, 7 Innis Avenue, after a long illness. Born in the Town of Beekman, Sept 2, 1878, she was the daughter of Thomas and Phoebe Rogers Butler. Mrs Butler who always had lived in Dutchess County, had been a resident of Poughkeepsie for the last 46 years.  Her husband Odell Cornell Butler died in April 1928.  She was a member of Trinity Methodist Church. Surviving are two sons, Melville C and Wilson W Butler, city; four sisters, Mrs Jennie Jackson, Hopewell Junction; Mrs Mary E Willard, California; Mrs Augusta M Alley, LaGrangeville; and Mrs Pauline J Hadden, city and one brother, Arthur Wright, LaGrangeville.  Services will be conducted [?] o'clock, Saturday afternoon at the Dowling Funeral Home, 43 Fairview Avenue. The Rev W Bernard Grossman, minister of Trinity Church, will officiate. Burial will be in the Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home 7 to 9 o'clock tomorrow night.

Wright - Haight

Alice Zilah Wright, the daughter of Thomas L Wright & Phoebe Rogers, married Clarence Percy Bullis, the son of Charles Bullis & Mary Beboise and they had 2 children - Clarence Jr & Gladys.

Clarence Sr outlived his wife and his only son.

A large gathering of sympathizing friends and neighbours attended the funeral of Mrs Clarence Bullis at Freedom Plains Pres Church Sunday afternoon. Deceased was formerly Miss Alice Wright of LaGrangeville, and a member of this church also in her younger days of the choir.  She had been a terrible sufferer for weeks with a complication of diseases. She leaves to mourn her loss a father and mother, several brothers and sisters, one boy Percy, and a little girl Gladys, age about 6 and 3, her husband lives on the Hasting Farm formerly occupied by A M Hall. Rev Mr Lent preached and undertaker Lawrence of Pleasant Valley had the funeral in hand.

Hudson Register, Fri, 12 Jun 1914 

Percival F Bullis, the 11 years old son of Mr and Mrs Clarence Bullis of Pleasant Valley, Dutchess County, was seized with cramps while in swimming in the Wappingers Creek and was drowned.

Their daughter Gladys married Clayton Haight, the son of Alfred E Haight & Emma M Young. They had 2 children - Charles & Edith.

Alfaretta Elizabeth,'Betty', Knapp, the daughter of Franklin J Knapp & Susan A Wright, married Charles Royal Utter. He was the son of James Harvey Utter & Louise A White.  Charles & Alfaretta had 3 children - Charles Jr, Shirley & Joan.

Charles R. Utter, 78, Harmony Road, Pawling, died Friday, September 22, at his home. He was a retired rural letter carrier. Born in Pawling on September 9, 1900, the son of James H. and Louise White Utter, he was a member of the Pawling Grange and a 50-year member of the Harlem Valley Lodge, Free and Accepted Masons. Survivors include his wife, the former Betty Knapp who he married on October 29, 1927; two daughters, Mrs. Alan Rouse of Pawling and Mrs. Richard Larsen of Poughkeepsie; a son, Charles Jr. of Poughkeepsie; two brothers, Kenneth and Clarence, both of Pawling; a sister, Mrs. Dorothy Sachuk of Stamford, Conn. and 10 grandchildren. Funeral services were held on Monday, September 25, at the Pawling Central Baptist Church with the Rev. Erie D. Clark and the Rev. Cortland Bryant officiating. Burial was in Maple Avenue Cemetery, Patterson. Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the Horn and Thomes Funeral Home, 83 East Main Street, Pawling. Donations may be made to the Pawling Central Baptist Church.

Charles Jr married Margaret Mary Clark, the daughter of James L Clark & Irene Fitzpatrick; they had 5 children - Charles III, Karen, James, Charles T & Anne.

Infant Son of Pawling Couple Dies Suddenly
Charles R Utter III, infant son of Mr and Mrs Charles R Utter, Jr, of Pawling, died suddenly at St Francis Hospital, Poughkeepsie, on Monday, March 23, 1959. He was born at St Francis Hospital on Saturday, March 21, 1959. His mother, the former Margaret Clark, is the daughter of Mr and Mrs James Clark of Pawling, and the his father, Charles R Utter Jr is the son of Mr and Mrs Charles R Utter, also of Pawling. Interment was in St John's Cemetery on Tuesday, March 24.

Evelyn Ethel Knapp was the youngest daughter of Thomas B Knapp & Ethel M Veile.  She married George Raymond Jennings, the son of Clarence Jennings & Bertha Ingalls and they had one daughter, Deborah Mae.  Based on her death date, she may have died from complications of child birth. 

James Arthur Knapp was the youngest child of  Thomas & Ethel and based on the obits found, he may have died of cancer.

Hopewell Junction - James A Knapp, 29, of Hillside Lake Road, town of East Fishkill, died at his home, Thursday (Dec 24, 1970). He operated the Knapp dairy Farm in partnership with his father. Mr Knapp was a member of the Dutchess County Extension Service, the Capital District Jersey Cattle Club and the National Jersey Cattle Club. He was first lieutenant of the Hillside Lake Fire Co. born at Poughkeepsie, Jan 17, 1941, he was the son of Thomas B and Ethel Vellie Knapp. He was a graduate of Wappingers Central School. Surviving are his parents; a sister, Mrs Mildred Lund of Agawam, Mass; two brothers, Frank V Knapp of Millbrook and Lewis T Knapp of Stormville. Funeral service will be held at the Auchmoody Fuenral Home, Rt 82, Hopewell Junction, Sunday at 1 pm. The Rev William N Boak will officiate. Interment will be in Freedom Plains Cemetery.

Susan Annie Wright, the daughter of Thomas L Wright & Phoebe Rogers married Franklin Joseph Knapp, the son of James I Knapp & Sarah A Knapp; and they had 5 children - Clarence, Thomas, Alfaretta, Sarah & Rheuella.

F J Knapp Buried Today
Fishkill - Frank J Knapp, prominent in this section for the past 43 years as a dairyman and fruit framer, died suddenly Saturday afternoon at St Francis Hospital, Poughkeepsie. He failed to rally from a serious operation. Born in East Fishkill, Mr Knapp, son of the late James I Knapp and Sarah Knapp, was a native of East Fishkill. Frank Knapp was a charter member of historic Arthursburg Grange and a member and former deacon of Bethel Baptist Church, Shenandoah. He was very well know in Southern Dutchess County. Surviving Mr Knapp, besides his widow, Mrs Annie S Knapp are: four children, Clarence of Fishkill Plains; Thomas, Sarah and Alvaretta, Pawling; two brothers, Homer and Bertram Knapp, Fishkill Plains; two sisters, Mrs George Brown, Dover Plains, and Miss Emma Knapp, Fishkill Plains. Seven grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews also survive. Among them are Delmar C Ketcham and Mrs Wright Jackson, Fishkill. Funeral services were held from the home in Fishkill Plains today at 3 pm. The Reverend Scott, Cassville, and the Rev A D Young, Syracuse, officiated. Burial was in Hopewell Rural Cemetery under Roosa and Schierding.

Millbrook - Thomas B Knapp, 96, A resident of Wappingers Falls and lifelong area resident, died May 23, 1997 at home. He was the owner and operator of Knapps Farm at Hillside Lake in Wappingers Falls before retiring in 1980.  Mr Knapp was a lifetime member of the Hillside Lake Volunteer Fire Department and a member of the Bethel Baptist Church in Hopewell Junction. Born Aug 22, 1900 in Fishkill Plains, he was a son of Franklin J and Anne Wright Knapp. On Oct 30, 1924, he married Ethel Velie in Freedom Plains.  Mrs Knapp died March 25, 1977. Mr Knapp is survived by two sons, Frank V Knapp of Millbrook, and Lewis T Knapp of Stormville; a daughter, Mildred E Martin of Fort Orange, Fla; a sister, Betty Utter of Pawling; 19 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; tow nieces; and one nephew. In addition to his wife, Mr Knapp was predeceased by a daughter, Evelyn Jennings; a son, James Knapp; a brother Clarence Knapp; and a sister, Sarah Gargaro. Arrangements were made by the Robert H Auchmoody Funeral Homes Inc, Hopewell Junction. Services were at the funeral home with the Rev Ralph Verdu officiating. Burial was in Freedom Plains Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Bethel Baptist Church, Att: Thomas B Knapp Memorial Fund, Shenandoah Road, Hopewell Junction, NY 12533.

Wappingers Falls - Mrs Ethel May Knapp, 75, of Hillside Lake Road, died Friday at her home after a long illness. Born in the Town of LaGrange, May 19, 1901, she was the daughter of Arthur and Carrie (Van Wyck): Velie. Mrs Knapp was a member and trustee of the Hillside Lake Fire Co. Ladies Auxiliary. She also was a member of the Freedom Plains Presbyterian Church. She was married Oct 30, 1924 in Freedom Plains to Thomas Knapp, who survives. Also surviving are a daughter, Mrs Mildred E Lund, Agawam, Mass; two sons, Franklin V, Millbrook, and Lewis T, Stormville; a sister, Mrs Florine Slocum, Millbrook; 20 grandchildren; two great grandchildren; an aunt and several nieces and nephews. The funeral will be Monday, 2 pm at the Robert H Auchmoody Funeral Home, Route 82, Hopewell Junction. The Rev William N Boak and the Rev John McCullough will officiate. Burial will be Freedom Plains Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home today from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm. The Hillside Lake Fire Co Ladies Auxiliary will conduct a serviced at the funeral home tonight at 8 o'clock.
