Roberts Obits



Below are the obits for John Roberts, Ella Roberts and her husband, Theodore Van Avery.


John & Ella were children of James Harvey Roberts & Martha Ann Hegeman.  John died on a hunting trip and was married for 3 short years when he left Mary Ella Sweet a widow. His sister Ella was married 11 years when her husband died of consumption after already losing 2 of her 4 children.

Gloversville, Sept 27 - Yesterday John Roberts, Edward and George Hathaway and Thomas [Cotan] of Mayfield, started out on a hunting trip to Benson, Hamilton county.  They reached Benson about three o'clock in the afternoon, and while Mr Roberts was engaged in taking the rifles from the wagon, one of them was discharged, the ball going through his right lung.  Dr Blake of Northville was immediately summoned but the unfortunate man died at nine o'clock this morning.  He was 29 years of age, and besides a widow, is survived by his father and mother and three sisters.  The body was brought to Mayfield today.  Mr Roberts was a member of the odd fellows society and the Methodist church, and president of the grange of Mayfield.

Mrs Ella Van Avery, 59, died this morning at 6:30 at the home of her daughter, Mrs Edward Eschler, Jr, at Riceville after several months illness.  Mrs Van Avery had resided in Mayfield all her life.  She was a member of the Mayfield Methodist Church and the Sunday School and took an active interest in its affairs as long as her health permitted.  The survivors are two daughters, Mrs Edward Eschler, Jr and Mrs Ivan Wemple, of Mayfield; two sisters, Mrs Antoinette Dixon, of Johnstown; and Mrs Minerva Thompson of Mayfield; six grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.  The funeral will be held at the home Saturday afternoon at 3:30.  The Rev William Kroeger of the Methodist Church will officiate and interment made in the Mayfield Cemetery.

Theodore Van Avery of Edinburg, NY, died at the home of his sister, Mrs Josie Barker, in this place last week Thursday morning, of consumption, aged 35 years.  Mr Van Avery had been ill for several months and for some time past had been living with Mrs Barker in order that he might be near his physician, Dr Finch.  He is survived by a widow and two children, his father, Henry Van Avery of Edinburg; three brothers, Lewis of Gloversville, Sherman of Mayfield and Fay of Edinburg; also three sisters, Mrs Charles Barker of Edinburg, Mrs George Hudson of Mosherville, and Mrs Jose Barker of this place.  The funeral was held at 1 pm on Saturday from the M E Church at Mayfield.  Rev L D [Van Arnam], pastor of the church, conducting the services.  The interment took place in the cemetery at Mayfield.
