Last Man Standing


Born in 1882, Jay ‘Spencer’ Althouse was the son of John P Althouse & Emma R Woodward.  He married Katherine Mahala Meyer, the daughter of Henry Meyer & Jennie Dunham in 1915 and they had 2 children – Mildred & Irving.  Irving would outlive them all, including his own children.

JS Althouse Drops Dead At Work In Fields

Mechanicville, Sept 18 (Special) - J Spencer Althouse who resides about a mile west of Lapes Corners on the Mechanicville-Schenectady state road, dropped dead this morning in a field near his home. Mr Althouse arouse as usual this morning, and ate a hearty breakfast, after which he complained to his wife he felt an attack of indigestion, to which he had been subject. Mrs Althouse urged him to allow her to send for a physician but he refused saying he would feel better shortly and asking her to apply home remedies, which she did. About 8:30 o'clock he told his wife he felt much better and left the house to take the cows to pasture. Mrs Althouse said she looked from the window a couple of times and she saw him in the field with the cows. About 9 o'clock she missed him and being alarmed over his attack in the house at once went to the field where she found him dead. Coroner Johnson from this city was notified and went to the scene. Upon investigation he pronounced death due to acute indigestion and valvular heart trouble. Mr Althouse was born in the home where he and his family resides 47 years ago and is survived by his wife, one sone and one small daughter.

Mrs Katherine Meyer Althouse, 80 of route 9, Clifton Park, died Thursday at Leonard Hospital after a long illness. A lifelong resident of Clifton Park, Mrs Althouse was a member of Clifton Park United Methodist church. Survivors include on son, Irving Althouse of Clifton Park; one daughter, Mrs Mildred Kenyon of Corinth; one brother, Orville Meyer of Clifton Park; two grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 11 am Monday from the Gordon C Emerick Funeral Home, Clifton Park, with Rev Ray Demming, pastor of Clifton Park United Methodist Church, officiating. Interment will be in Clifton Park Center Baptist Cemetery.

Irving's sister, Mildred Viola Althouse, married Victor Ellsworth Kenyon - he died in 1970, she died in 1992 - they had one daughter Linda.

Irving was married twice - first to Mabel Louise George who bore him 2 children - Janice & John - she died less than 10 years into the marriage that took place in 1941.

Mechanicville - Mrs. Mabel L. Althouse died at her home in Clifton Park this morning following a short illness. Mrs. Althouse was born in Mechanicville Feb. 11, 1920, had lived in Clifton Park for 14 years. She was a graduate of Mechanicville High School and former employee of the Rensselaer County treasurer's office, Troy, member of the Clifton Park Methodist Church, Clifton Park Parkettes, member and past matron of Star of Liberty, OES, and Saratoga Court of Amaranth. She is survived by her husband, Irving M. Althouse, a daughter, Janice K. and son, John H.; mother, Mrs. Mabel George, Mechanicville; three sisters, Mrs. Gladys Lewis, West Milton; Mrs. Hazel Conerty, Mechanicville and Miss Bernice George, Albany; grandmother, Mrs. Louise Jones, Hemstreet Park, and several aunts and an uncle. Funeral will be held at the residence at a time to be announced. Arrangements are under the direction of the J.D.Dunn Funeral Home.

Ditch Cave-In Causes Death Of Area Youth

A Clifton Park youth, working on a construction project in the Town of Coeymans, lost his life late Wednesday afternoon when the ditch he was working in caved in on top of him, State Police at Selkirk said. John H Althouse, 18, of RD 1, Clifton Park, died when an eight-foot wall of dirt, lining a ditch he was helping excavate in front of Peter B Coeyman School on Route 143, caved in. The fatal mishap occurred at 4:30 pm troopers said.  Although fellow workers tried to dig him out as quickly as possible it was 45 minutes before Mr Althouse was taken by ambulance to the Albany Medical Center Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival. Following an autopsy at th Albany Hospital, Albany County Coroner DeForrest Dietz issued a verdict of accidental death. Althouse is survived by his parents, Irving and Helen Althouse of Clifton Park two brothers, David Cutbush of Lexington Park, Md and William Cutbush of Columbus, SC; two sisters, Mrs Janice Johnson of Clearbrook, Va, and Mrs Judith Harrington of Rock City Falls, and his grandmother, Mrs Katherine Althouse of Clifton Park. The body was taken to the Gordon C Emerick Funeral Home, Route 9, Clifton Park. Funeral arrangements are pending.

Irving's daughter, Janice, married James Gordon Johnson & Ronald Bradley McFadden.  Janice died in 2006

Irving found love a second time in 1957 with Helen May Clapper.

Helen M. Althouse, 92, of County Farm Road, passed away Friday, December 4, 2009, at her home.  Born in Charlton, June 15, 1917, she was the daughter of the late Burt and Edna Clapper. She was a graduate of Ballston Spa High School, class of 1935. Helen worked for General Electric Co. in Schenectady for 22 years, retiring in 1977. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Ballston Spa, the Order of the Eastern Star and the Ballston Area Seniors. Helen was predeceased by two children, Janice McFadden and John Althouse; brother, Marvin Clapper; and sister, Lena Lewis. She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Irving "Irv" Althouse; her children, David Cutbush (Betty), Judie Cooley and William Cutbush (Hope); 11 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m., Tuesday, December 8, at the United Methodist Church, Milton Avenue, Ballston Spa. A calling hour will precede the service from 10 to 11 a.m. on Tuesday at the church. Burial will be private. Memorial contributions may be made to Community Hospice of Saratoga, 179 Lawrence Street, Saratoga Springs, NY 12866 or the United Methodist Church, 101 Milton Avenue, Ballston Spa, NY 12020. The family would like to thank Kellie and Vicki from Community Hospice of Saratoga for their care and compassion.

Irving died in 2014 and unfortunately, I couldn't find an obit for him
