Evening
Recorder, Tues, 14 Jan 1941
The Rev John E Thompson, 57, native of the Town of Mayfield and pastor of various churches in the Troy Conference for many years, died yesterday at Green Mountain Junior College, Poultney, Vt. He had served as pastor, professor of Biblical literature and professor of English literature at the college. While speaking during the college chapel service Monday morning about 10 o'clock, Mr Thompson suddenly collapsed on the rostrum. It is believed that he was seized with a paralytic stroke. He was born in the Town of Mayfield on November 8, 1883, the son of the late Edward Thompson and Minerva Roberts Thompson. He received his early education in the Mayfield schools and graduated from Gloversville High School in 1906. While he was preparing for college, he taught school in the Phelps Street unit and in the Mayfield School. He then entered Hobart College at Geneva, from which he was graduated in 1910. While a college student, he served as lay preacher in a Methodist Chapel at East Geneva. After graduating from college, he received his theological training in the Troy Conference course, after having been admitted to the conference. His first pastorate included the Methodist churches at Edinburg and Batchellerville, from 1912 into 1913. In the latter year, on October 25, he was married to Elsie Sumner of Edinburg. He then served several other charges: 1914-1917 at Rock City Falls; 1918-1923 at Grace Church in Schenectady; 1924-1925 at Hedding Church, Troy; 1926-1932 at Hudson Falls. From 1933 to 1936 he served in the Memorial Methodist Church at Troy. It was while at that charge that he was stricken with the heart ailment which ultimately caused his death, it is believed. Due to his ill health, he retired in 1937 and continued so until 1939. In 1939, he was recalled to active service in Green Mountain College at Poultney and assumed his duties there on November 28. The survivors include his widow; one daughter, Mrs Stanley Brown, Mt Vernon, NY and three sisters, Mrs Hubert Kneeskern and Mrs Albert Beard, Ephratah, and Miss Beatrice Thompson, Gloversville. The funeral will be held at the First Methodist Church in Gloversville, Thursday at 3 pm. The Rev Mark Kelly, D D, superintendent of the Albany District, will officiate. Burial will be in the Mayfield Cemetery. He was buried on 16 Jan 1941 at Union Rural Cemetery in Mayfield, Fulton Co, New York.
