On Saturday, August 19, 1911, occurred the death of Joseph P Duncan at the Denison Hospital, where he had undergone an operation for appendicitis. The operation proved successful, but the surgeons found other complications with which they were unable to contend. In the early part of August, Mr Duncan began ailing and along about the tenth he was taken more seriously and after consulting his physicians an operation was deemed necessary. In the death of Mr Duncan, another long-time resident of Crawford County is taken. He came to Crawford County many years ago and settled in Paradise Township, and engaged inf arming and in buying and selling cattle. For years he drove all over this county buying stock and he was one of the best known men of his community. The Duncan home in paradise was one of the best in that township. No one ever asked for assistance in time of need but they received it, and the friends made at that time have been lasting. Deceased was born October 3, 1846, in Maryville, Tenn, where his parents, Joseph Duncan and Susan Norwood-Duncan, had lived since childhood. The family moved to Crawford County, Illinois in 1852. The father departed this lfie in May 1863. When the Civil War broke out, three of his brothers responded to the call. Later, young Joseph, at the age of eighteen, by his mother's consent, enlisted. After the war, his mother, two sisters and one brother and himself moved to Arcola, Ill. He was married to Hannah M Schouten October 5, 1875. Eleven children were born of this union, three having died in infancy. The remaining ones, Annie N Vollertsen, Henry, Edward P, Susan M Scott, Hattie M Hoffman, Eugene N, Jennie C Eggers and J Percy, with eleven grandchildren, all residents of Iowa except Jennie of Nebraska, with three brothers and sisters and his second wife, live to mourn his demise. One brother, Jackson, died May 18th of this year. January 28, 1909, he was married to Mrs Mary E Carter, who is left to mourn his loss. The funeral was held Tuesday forenoon from the Presbyterian Church, and interment made in Oakland Cemetery, members of John A Logan Post G A R of which deceased was a member, attending in a body.
