Some Vines

Sybil Katherine Smith was the daughter of Stephen Henry Smith & Harriet Pease Rogers.  Born in Halfmoon, she married fellow New Yorker Charles Clinton Vines, the son of David Vines & Harriet Palmer.  Together they had 6 children - Minnie, Vera,Mildred, Dorothy, Sybil & Keith.

Sybil died in 1953 and Charles killed himself the following year; Keith, the youngest, died in 1974.

Mechanicville - Mrs Charles C Vines, the former Sibyl Smith, died this morning at her home, 238 S Second Ave, following an illness of several months. Mrs Vines was born in the Town of Halfmoon 70 years ago, daughter of the late Mr and Mrs Stephen Smith. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church. Survivors are her husband, Charles C Vines; five daughters, Mrs William Thomson and Mrs Leonard Offenbacker, Mechanicville; Mrs Glen Bellam, Eden; Mrs Robert Baxter, Valley Falls, and Mrs Frank Smith, Round Lake; one son, Keith Vines, Mechanicville; one sister, Mrs James Weeks, Franklin, NJ; nine grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Funeral will be Friday at 2:30 pm at the J Dwight Dunn Funeral Home, 319 Park Ave. The Rev James K Stewart, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, will officiate and burial will be in Hudson View Cemetery. The funeral home will be open Wednesday from 7 to 9 pm and Thursday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 pm.

Charles Vines Shoots Self At Son's Home
Mechanicville - Despondency over the death of his wife was given by state police as the reason for the suicide yesterday morning of Charles C Vines, 72, of 238 So 2nd, who was found with a .38 calibre bullet wound in his head at the home of his son, Keith, Waterford-Mechanicville Rd. The verdict of suicide was issued by Dr Francis A Mastrianni, Saratoga County Coroner, who was assisted in his investigation by Cpl R J Kuzia and Cpl Leo Zelenko, of the Latham State Police Barracks. The bullet entered his right temple and passed through the skull emerging above the left ear. The revolver had been in Mr Vines' possession for a long time. Funeral services will be held at 2 pm Wednesday from the Dunn Funeral home, 319 Park Ave, the Rev James K Stewart, pastor of the Mechanicville First Presbyerian Church, officiating. Burial will be in Hudson View Cemetery. Mr Vines, a native of this city, was a retired employee of the Boston & Maine Railroad. Organizations of which he was a member included OnDaWa Lodge, F&Am; OnDaWa Chapter, R&AM, the Scottish Rite Bodies of Albany and an honorary member of the Mechanicville Elks Club. OnDaWa will conduct Masonic services at 8 pm tomorrow. In addition to his son, Keith, he is survived by five daughters, Mrs William Thompson, North Tory; Mrs Glenn Bellan, Eden; Mrs Leonard Offenbacker, this city; Mrs Robert Baxter, Valley Falls, Mrs Frank Smith of Round Lake. He is also survived by a sister, Miss Minnie Vines, North Troy.

Keith Vines; Former Area Resident
Uncasville, Conn - Keith Vines, 51, of 50 Old Fitch Hill Rd, formerly of Mechanicville, died Saturday at his residence. Born in Mechanicville, son of the late Charles and Sybil Smith Vines, he resided in Mechanicville most of his life and was educated in Mechanicville public schools. A veteran of World Ward II in which he served in the US Army, he was employed by the Electric Boat Co of Groton, Conn. He is survived by his wife, Tessie Marcella Vines; a son Gary Vines of Storrs, Conn; a daughter, Miss Cathy Vines of Uncasville; four sisters, Mrs Vera Vellam of Eden, Mrs Minnie Thomson, of Waterford, and Mrs Mildred Offenbacker and Mrs Sybil Smith, both of Round Lake, and several nieces and nephews. The funeral will be held at 11 am Wednesday from the Dunn Funeral Home, 319 Park Ave, Mechanicville, with Rev W Ray Deming, pastor of the Round Lake-Clifton Park Methodist Church, officiating. Interment will be in Hudson View Cemetery, Mechanicville.
