Intertwining Vines

Vera Helen Vines was the daughter of Charles Clinton Vines & Sybil Katherine Smith.  

She married Glenn A Vellam, the son of George Vellam & Elizabeth Hardy and had a daughter Beverly.   

Vera passed away in 2000, Beverly in 1999.

Funeral services were held at the Lang Funeral Home Wednesday afternoon at 2 for Glenn A Vellam, 69, who died of a heart attack on Saturday evening. Mr Vellam's grandparents came to Eden from England and he lived here all his life. A veteran of the First World War, he worked with his father, George Vellam, on their farm until 1926, when he purchased the general store on West Church St in partnership with his sisters, Pearl and Blanche. Mr Vellam was a member of Newell-Falulkner Post 880, American Legion, a steward of the Methodist Church of Eden, a charter member of Eden Volunteer Fire Dept and trustee of the Eden Cemetery Association. He is survived by his wife, the former Vera Vines, and one daughter, Mrs Robert Guenther of Eden. He also leaves his sisters, Blanche and Pearl. His brother Clayton died in 1941. The Rev Joseph Shipman officiated at the funeral and burial was in Evergreen Cemetery.

Vera's sister Dorothy married Robert Mille Baxter Jr, the son of Robert Baxter & mary Wrape and they had 4 children - Mary, Dayle, Dorothy, & Faith.  Robert died in 1991 after marrying another Vines girl, Dorothy & Vera's sister Sybil.

Mrs Robert Baxter Dies Suddenly
Salem - Mrs Dorothy Baxter, wife of Robert Baxter of Scotts Lake Road, Salem, died suddenly January 28 at her home. Besides her husband, she is survived by four daughters, Mrs L James Snow of Canandalgua, Mrs Charles Madigan and Mrs Charles Matheson of Melrose, and Mrs Paul McWhorter of Argyle; four sisters, Mrs Verna Vellam of Eden, Mrs William Thomson of Waterford, and Mrs Leonard Offenbacker and Mrs Mrs Frank Smith of Round Lake; one brother, Keith Vines of Uncasville, Conn, and 14 grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted Sunday at the Kilmer Funeral Home, Argyle, by the Rev Gerald Hazard, pastor of the Argyle United Presbyterian Church. Interment will be Hudson View Cemetery, Mechanicville, in the spring.

Sybil S, twin to Keith in the last blog, was first married to Frank B Smith, the son of Frank Smith & Violet Smith and they had 1 daughter, Ann Marie.  After he passed, Sybil married her sister's widow.  Sybil died in 2002.

Frank B Smith, 54, of Round Lake, an employee of General Electric Co, Schenectady, died suddenly Saturday at Leonard Hospital. He was a member of the Round Lake Methodist Church and of the Men's Club of that church. Survivors include his wife, Sybil Vines Smith; one daughter, Mrs Richard Seymour of Saratoga Springs; one sister, Mrs Fred Guilmette of Mechanicville; one brother, William A Smith of Mechanicville and two grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 2 pm from the Dunn Funeral Home, 219 Park Ave, Mechanicville with Rev W Ray Deming, pastor of Round Lake Methodist Church officiating. Interment will be in Hudson View Cemetery, Mechanicville.

The eldest girl, Minnie G married Englishman William James Thomson, the son of James W Thomson & Christina Olsen.  They had one daughter, Marilyn Frances Thomson.

Mr Thomson Dies; Former Bakery Aide
William J Thomson, 69, of 662 1st St, Waterford, a retired employee of the Frelhofer Baking Co, was stricken at his residence Sunday and taken to Leonard Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival. Rensselaer County Coroner Anthony E Matera ruled that death was due to natural causes. A native of Liverpool, England, he was the son of the late James W and Christine Olsen Thomson. He retired four years ago after more than 40 years of service with the Frelhofer Baking Co. He had lived in Mechanicville for 50 years prior to moving to the Troy-Waterford area 17 years ago. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Lanisngburgh and a member of the W L Howland Chemical Engine Co 5 in Mechanicville. Survivors include his wife the former Minnie Vines; one daughter, Mrs Paul Single of Waterford, and one grandson. Funeral services will be held at 2 pm Wednesday from the Dunn Funeral Home, 319 Park Ave, Mechanicville, with Rev Thomas S Evans, pastor of First Presbyterian Church of Lansingburgh, officiating with the assistance of Rev James Patterson. Interment will be in Oakwood Cemetery.
