Again, re-checking my work, albeit a bit mind-numbing, has been worth it - the number of mistakes I have been able to correct - priceless!
Today I am working on Josiah Rosekrans, the son of Benj Rosekrans & Mary VanSantvoord born in 1844 at Halfmoon, NY. He was a farmer, a saloon keeper & lastly, a painter.
He is with his family in 1850 & 1860 and by 1870, he's married to a girl named Josephine. In 1871, he is working as a painter in Quebec and they have a little girl named Josephine.
As it turns out, Josephine Jr is actually Gertrude Josephine Rosekrans. Her siblings were Margaret M, Lorenzo Josiah, Mary E & Florence Rose Rosekrans.
Josiah's obit doesn't tell us much....
Troy Times, 10 Oct 1923
The funeral of Josiah Rosekrans was held this afternoon from the home of his
granddaughter, Mrs Harry Carlson, at Latham's Corners. The service was conducted by Rev Harold W
Buckland, pastor of the Newtonville Methodist Church. Members of the family acted as bearers. Burial was in the Crescent Cemetery.
My dilemma? What was Josephine's last name?
At one point I had her surname as Filkins - one of the daughters of John W Filkins & Hannah Filkins which would have meant that Lenora Filkins, who married Josiah's brother George, would have been her sister.
I have no idea where that came from but after reviewing it again, according to the censuses for the Filkins family, the closest child would have been one Laura Jane Filkins. However, Laura was a spinster who worked as a teacher & was on the 1870 census with her family - Josephine was with Josiah's family in 1870 - so Laura can't be in 2 places!
What I did discover was that based on the article below that ran in the Waverly Free Press, 27 Sep 1912, Josephine was a cousin of Lucinda Sarah Mills - aka Lucy who married John Codner (Lucy the daughter of William F Mills & Cornelia Rosecrantz)
So I know she died between 1912 and 1915 as Josiah is widowed & living with Gertrude in 1915.
I have many lines of work to do and may yet find her surname, but for now, UGG!
