Of course there's another Smith!

Rockley, April 21 - William Burton Smith passed away suddenly at his home in Rockley on Sunday, April 13.  Mr Smith was born at Rockley in 1918, a son of the late Austin and Lucy (Porter) Smith.  He is survived by his wife, the former Florence Geeno; two sisters, (Audrey) Mrs Cecil Smith, Harmony; (Minnie) Mrs Harold MacKay, Rockley; three brothers Cecil, Rockley; Logan, Edmonton; and Mark, Amherst.  A veteran of the second World War, he served four years overseas with the North Nova Scotia Highlanders.  He was a past president of the Pugwash Branch, Royal Canadian Legion.  He served on the executive for several years and was an active member in all activities, also the NNS Memory Club.  He was a member of Calvary United Church, Port Howe, where he served as an elder and served as treasurer for the past four years.  Bill, as he was known by a wide circle of friends, was active in community life, always ready and willing to lend a helping hand.  The funeral was held from Mundle's Funeral Home on Tuesday, April 15, with Rev Aubrey Moore officiating, assisted by Legion Chaplain Rev Ellis MacAllister.  All funeral arrangements and graveside service were in the charge of Legion President, Mervill Patterson, and Legion members.  With Mrs Gillis at the piano, a mixed choir sang, "Oh God Our Help in Ages Past", "How Great Thou Art" and as the remains were being carried form the home, "God Will Take Care of You".  Rev Mr Moore read "Crossing the Bar" while Mrs Gillis played the music.  Pallbearers were legion members, George chestnut, George Smith, Fred Brownell, Layton Allen, Emmerson Chase and Roland McKenzie.  Honorary pallbearers wee Hance Olsen, Walter Cameron, Raymond Morrse, NN, Lester Fraser; flag bearers, Ralson Pollard, Lloyd Isenor and Elmer MacArthur, also legion members.  Legion members acted as flower bearers with the exception of the pillow which was carried by Douglas Mills.  Interment took place in Rockley Cemetery with Legion members and Auxiliary, the largest group yet seen in this area, accompanying the body.  The Last Post was sounded by Horace Buck, Springhill.
