Mary Marie Westover


Mary Marie Westover, born in 1904, was the daughter of John Westover & Lulu Henrietta Worden and she married Victor Axel Balander, the son of Finnish parents Matt Balander & Emma Rasmus.  Together they had 5 children, Victor, Clifford who died in infancy, Peggy, Charles & Donald.

Mrs. Balander died early Thursday morning, Feb. 13, at St. Joseph's hospital following a lengthy illness. She was born Aug. 26, 1904 in Elkton, S.D. to John and Lulu Westover and attended school in Elkton and Brookings. She was married to Victor E. Balander on Aug. 14, 1926. In the year 1939 they moved to Lead, where she was living at the time of her death. She was a member of the First Baptist Church and was active in church affairs; belonging to the Order of Eastern Star, Degree of Honor, BPW, Senior Citizens and VFW Auxiliary. Survivors include three sons Victor L., Lead; Captain C. Douglas, USAF, Wichita, Kans. and Donald S. Balander, Beloit, Wis.; one daughter, Mrs. Benjamin (Peggy) Bauer, Sturgis.; 15 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; three brothers, Ralph and Vernon, St. Helens, Ore. and Harold, Minneapolis, Minn.; four sisters Mrs. Floy Dahl, Mrs. Arthur (Vivian) Tayler, Mrs. Robert (Betty Lou) Stickler and Mrs. Marguerite McGivern, all of St. Helens, Ore. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two sons and two sisters. Funeral services for Mary Balander have been set for 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 17, at the Daniel Funeral Home Chapel, Lead. The Rev. Richard Padrick, pastor of the Twin Qty First Baptist Church, will officiate. Interment will be in West Lead Cemetery.

Victor A Balander, Homestake miner, died early Wednesday morning at the hospital in Lead following a lengthy illness. Funeral arrangements are pending under the direction of the McColley Funeral Home, Lead.  Balander was born March 22, 1901 at Elk Creek and had lived in the Northern Hill all of his life with the exception of about six years. He was married Aug 14, 1926 at Deadwood to the former Mary Westover, Brookings, who survives. Following their marriage, the couple moved to St Helens, Ore, where they lived before returning to Lead in 1932. Balander's work record with Homestake included service in the woods, saw mill and mine department until World War II when he was transferred to the mechanical department and then later returned to the mine. He was a member of the Homestake Veterans Association and the Masonic Lodge. In addition to his wife, he is survived by three sons, Victor L, Lead; Douglas, stationed with the US Air Force in Germany; Sanford, a student at Black Hills State College; a daughter, Mrs Ben (Peggy) Bauer, Boulder Canyon; 13 grandchildren, four brothers, Emil Lead; Frank, Roubaix; John, Star, Fla; Pete, Deadwood; and three sisters, Mrs Edna Storsdahl, Deadwood; Mrs Lydia Williamson, Roubaix; and Mrs Sophie Spaulding, Deadwood.
