Well Preserved

While Caroline may have been "well preserved", the same can't be said for some of her family....

Caroline Peck was the daughter of Jeremiah Peck & Sarah Houghtalin and she married Allen Armstrong. They had 5 children - Sallie, Samantha, Thomas, George & James. Allen died in 1884, she in 1907

She Was One of the Oldest Residents of the Town of Butler
Mrs Caroline Armstrong, mother of Mrs Harlow Cole, of Butler, died last Saturday at 1215 am. She was one of the oldest women of this locality, having passed her 90th birthday last August. The funeral was held on Tuesday at 1 pm, the services being conducted by the Rev J H Britton of the Butler Center M E Church. Mrs Armstrong was born in Milford, Otsego County, NY, Aug 22, 1816. Her father was Jeremiah Peck who migrated to this locality from Saratoga County in 1826. She was a sister of the late Frank Peck of Wolcott. She was married to the late Allen Armstrong in October, 1835.  They lived for a time on the John L Phillips farm in Butler, 1866 going to what has since been called Armstrong Hill, the highest point in the township. There they lived during the long and busy life of Allen Armstrong when he was Member of Assembly and afterwards State Senator and Armstrong Hill was the Mecca of Wayne County republican politicians. Mrs Armstrong was a strong minded woman and a great reader up to the last days of her long life. She was familiar with the early history of the old town of Wolcott and was the only woman alive in this locality who attended the dedication of the old Universalist Church, which stood at the corner of New Hartford and Washington Streets, the last vestige of which disappeared many years ago. Allen Armstrong died in 1884.

Of the children, Sallie married Harlow A Cole, the son of Welcome Cole & Nancy Young; they had no children and Sallie died 3 months after her mother at 70 years.

The following 2 pictures were shared by Ancestry member Nancy Aten who got them from the Wayne County Historian.

Samantha married a Benjamin B Parker and died in 1866 at the age of 27 - again, no children.

Thomas C Armstrong married a girl named Anne Eliza Rogers, the daughter of Daniel & Ann Rogers.

Thomas also died in 1866 & Anne in 1872 - both in their 20s - leaving their son to be raised by his Rogers grandparents.

Frederick married a girl named Jennie A Dudley, the daughter of Charles A Dudley & Emma C Taylor.

Thomas' estate papers indicated he purchased a scholarship from the Geneva College for $100 for his son and based on his obit, it appears he took full advantage of the education afforded him; his wife was educated as well - studying at Ives Seminary and Potsdam Normal School. Fred died at the age of 32, his wife at the age of 53.
