Whitney Family

The family above is that of Wayland Jones Whitney & Fanny Emma Baldwin. They were married in 1881 & had 5 children - from left to right - Bessie, Louise, Elmer, Sarah & William.

Wayland was the son of William L Whitney & Sarah P Whitney, and like his father before him, Wayland worked in the local saw mill. Fanny was the daughter of Henry Smith Baldwin & Abigail B Farnham.

Wayland J Whitney, well known in this city, died Saturday morning at the Masonic home in Wallingford at the age of seventy-seven years.  The funeral will take place this afternoon at 3 o'clock from the Masonic home.  Burial will be in Springfield, Mass.

Elmer F Whitney, born in 1878, married a girl named Fern Ella Booth, the daughter of Burton R Booth & Martha M Smith; they had one daughter, Marjorie.

William Henry Whitney born in 1882, married Rose Ann Priestley, the daughter of Jeremiah Priestley & Mary Foster.  They had 3 children - Mary, Wayland & William.

Norwalk - May 5 - William H Whitney, 78, of 55 Silvermine Avenue, died today in his home. Services will take place Saturday at 10 am in the Raymond Funeral Home, 5 East Wall Street, with the Rev Ralph H Seguine, pastor of the Community Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery. St John's Lodge, AF and AM, will conduct memorial services Friday at 8 pm in the funeral home. Mr Whitney, a native of Brattleboro, VT, and a resident of Norwalk 30 years, was treasurer of the Whitney Brothers Oil Company in ruby Street. He was a past master of St John's Lodge; a member of Clinton Commandery, KT; past patron of Berkeley Chapter, OES; and a member of Washington Chapter, RAM. He was a member of the Yankee Division Association, and served with the rand of Captain in the Signal Corps during World War 1. He is survived by his wife, Rose Priestley Whitney; a daughter, Miss Mary E Whitney of Norwalk; two sons, Wayland of Wilton and William L Whitney of Norwalk; two sisters, Mrs Louise Gibbings of Springfield, Mass, and Mrs Sadie Newcomb of Cairo, NY and seven grandchildren.

Norwalk, April 18 - Mrs Rose Anne Whitney, 81, of 55 Silvermine Avenue, widow of William H Whitney, died Wednesday in a local convalescent home. Services will take place Friday at 130 pm in the Raymond Funeral Home, 5 East Wall Street, with the Rev David E Huff, pastor of the Zion Hill Methodist Church, Canondale, officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery. Born in Halifax, Yorkshire, England, Mrs Whitney was a resident of Norwalk many years. She was a past matron of the Berkeley Chapter, OES, and a past matron of the Order of the Amaranth of Norwalk. Survivors are a daughter, Miss Mary E Whitney of Norway; two sons, Wayland H of Wilton, and William L Whitney of Norwalk; a brother, Albert Priestley of Pompano Beach, Fla, and 10 grandchildren.

Louise Abigail Whitney married William Samuel Chalk Gibbings, an Englishman who was the son of Thomas Philip Gibbings & Catherine Bailey.  Together they had 3 children - Stuart, Leslie & Leona.

Sarah E Whitney was first married to a Mr Fletcher and then married Frank W Newcomb in 1920. He was the son of Daniel B Newcomb & Mary Griswold.

Lastly, Bessie May Whitney married Henry Cornelius Peck & had 5 children before they divorced - Hattie, Marion, Evelyn, Stanley & Henry Jr
