Mr & Mrs Smith

Bertha Margaret Smith, the oldest child of Samuel P Smith & Mary E Earing, married a farmer named William H Smith, the son of Philip H Smith & Susan Brasnaile. Together they had 3 children - Marville, Harold & Marie.

Funeral service Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock from her late residence, Albany-Shaker Road. Relatives and friends are invited. The home will be open Sunday evening from 7-9 o'clock. Interment Castleton, NY.

William H Smith - Funeral services for William H Smith, 75, who died Thursday, were held at his residence on the Shaker Road, Loudonville, yesterday with the Rev David C Davies, Menands, officiating. Born in Castleton, Mr Smith was a former druggist in that place for many years. He attended the Dutch Reformed Church there. Burial was in Castleton Cemetery. Survivors include the widow, Bertha M Smith; three children, Mrs Joseph Gritech, Menands; Harold S Smith, Shaker Road; and Mrs Kenneth J Sebast, Schenectady; also five grandchildren, Russell and Virginia Gritech, June and Alice Joy Smith, and James Kenneth Sebast.
 

Marville B Smith, who lived to be 100 years of age, married a gardener named Josef 'Joseph' Mathias Gritsch and they had 3 children - Marion, Russell & Virginia.

Harold Samuel Smith married Alice Eleanora McIntosh, the daughter of Charles E McIntosh & Charity R Dexter and they had 2 children - June & Alice. 

Marie E Smith married Kenneth James Sebast, the son of George Sebast Jr & Anna S Kearns and had 2 children - James & Barbara

K J Sebast Dies; at GE 27 Years
Kenneth J Sebast, 57, of Old State Road, a buyer in the wire mill department of the General Electric Co, died yesterday at St Clare's Hospital after a long illness. A native of Schenectady, Mr Sebast was employed at GE 27 years and was a member of the company Quarter Century Club. Mr Sebast was a member of the Princetown Reformed Church, Noah Lodge F and A M of Altamont and the Gifford Grange. Survivors include his widow, Mrs Marie E Smith Sebast; a son, James K Sebast of Middle Grove; a daughter, Mrs Barbara E Ogden of Woodstock; his parents, Mr and Mrs George Sebast, of Schenectady; and a brother, Earl Sebast also of Schenectady. Several nieces and nephews also survive. The funeral service will be held at the Princetown Reformed Church at 1030 am Friday. The Rev Harold Irish, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in Memory's Garden. The Bond Funeral Home will be open after 7 pm tomorrow. Memorial contributions may be made to the memorial fund of the Princetown Reformed Church.

Bertha M Elwood


Bertha M Elwood was the oldest daughter of Lester Henry Elwood & Sylvia Jane Smith who married Albertus Cornell.  He was the son of John Wesley Cornell & Ella Louisa Cornell.  Albert & Bertha had 3 children - John Lester, David Albertus & Jean Elizabeth Cornell.

Mrs Bertha M Cornell, 58, of 12 Eagle Street, died at 915 last night at her home. She was born in St Johnsville, Nov 17, 1902, and had lived in Gloversville for the past 43 years. She was a member of the North Main Street Methodist Church. She is survived by two sons, John and David Cornell, both of Gloversville; one daughter, Miss Jean Cornell, Gloversville; two sisters, Miss Evelyn Elwood, Gloversville, and Mrs Colvin Jennings, Amsterdam; one grandson, several nieces and nephews.

Mr Cornell was a leather worker by occupation, and was a member of North Main street Methodist Church. Survivors are his wife, Mrs Bertha Cornell; two sons, John L Cornell and David A Cornell; one daughter, Miss Jean Cornell; one sister, Mrs Fred DeMagistris, all of Gloversville; also nieces and nephews.

Carrie Raymond Birch

Carrie Raymond Birch was the older sister of Howard from the previous post - the daughter of Russell Keeler Birch & Ella M Raymond.  

She married Harry Nathan DeLong, the son of Henry C DeLong & Mille Smalley in 1906. Like his father, Harry was a farmer.

They had 4 children - LeGrand Birch, Jeanette Helene, Olive Pauline, & Barbara June

Mrs Carrie DeLong Dies at Clifton Park
Ballston Spa - Mrs Carrie DeLong, 63, widow of Harry DeLong, died at her home in the Town of Clifton Park Friday night. She was born June 24, 1884, in the Town of Halfmoon and was a member of the Jonesville Methodist Church. Survivors are one son Legrand DeLong; three daughters, Mrs Harold Magnussen, Mrs Clifford Wind and Mrs Harry Christiance; two brothers, Howard S Birch and James Raymond Birch; four grandchildren, Julianne DeLong, Kathleen and David Christiance and Gary Wing. Funeral service will be conducted at 2:30 pm Tuesday from home. Rev Rowland Conklin, pastor of the Jonesville Methodist church will officiate, and burial will be in the Jonesville Cemetery. The home will be open Monday evening.

Funeral services for Harry N De Long, 66, who died Sunday at Rexford after a long illness, will be Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock at his late home. Rev Lewis Henck of the Jonesville M E Church and Rev Fred Clarke of the Alplaus and Rexford Methodist churches will officiate. He was born in Ballston and for many years lived on a farm near Rexford. He was the son of the late Harry C De Long and Melissa Smalley De Long. The survivors are his wife, Mrs Carrie R B De Long, and three daughters, Jeanette, Pauline and Barbara De Long, and a son, LeGrand De Long, all of Rexford. A sister, Mrs Edna D Dyer lives in Saratoga.

Howard Sylvanus Birch

Howard Sylvanus Birch, the son of Russell Keeler Birch & Ella M Raymond, was born at Clifton Park, NY in 1888.  He took various jobs to support his family from a farm hand to a laborer at a refrigeration company to a nightwatchman at a dry goods store.

He was married twice and first wife died shortly after giving birth to their son.  His first wife was Emma J Kinns, the daughter of Joel R Kinns Jr & Ella S Burke. Their children were Sybil Alfreda, Martha E & Russell Kinns Birch.  

His second wife was Catherine Dorwood who was previously married to a fellow Scotsman named Robert Smith. She died at Normal, Illinois in 1984 where she had located to live with her daughter from her first marriage.

Mrs Emma Kinns Birch, 33 of Alplaus, wife of Howard S Birch, died Sunday afternoon in her home of pneumonia. A prayer service will be read from the home tomorrow at 1 o'clock. The funeral will be held at 3 o'clock from the Methodist Episcopal Church at Jonesville of which she was a former member, Rev Thomas M Bishop of the Alplaus Union Methodist Episcopal church, assisted by Rev H G Banks of Jonesville, will officiate. Burial will be in the Methodist cemetery at Jonesville. Prior to her marriage, Mrs Birch was a teacher in the Jonesville Methodist Episcopal Sunday school. She was born in the town of Clifton Park, March 10, 1889, and lived there until her marriage in 1914. Besides her parents and husband, she leaves a brother and sister and three children, Sibyl, five; Martha, three, and a son Russell K, who was born in December.

Birch Dies at 74; Rites Tomorrow
Howard Sylvanus Birch, 74, of Mohaw Avenue, Alplaus, was pronounced dead on arrival of natural causes at Ellis Hospital Saturday. Born at Elnora Dec 20 1888, he was a night watchman at the Wallace Co for about 20 years.  He had lived in the Alplaus area for 43 years and was a member of the Alplaus Methodist Church. He is survived by his wife, Catherine Smith Birch; three daughters, Mrs Charles Bopp Jr of Rexford, Mrs Leo G Blum of Schenectady, and Mrs Anthony Sterba of Normal, Ill; one son Russell K Birch of Schenectady. Also 10 grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. The funeral will be held at 2 pm tomorrow at Alplaus Methodist church with Rev James Beskin officiating.  Interment will be in Jonesville Cemetery. Friends may call at the Baxter Funeral Home 7 to 9 tonight.

James Raymond Birch

James Raymond Birch was the son of Russell Keeler Birch & Ella M Raymond - the Raymond line traces back to the Vincents.  James lived as Raymond and he went on to marry Gertrude A Boyce.

James Birch, Retired GE Employee, Dies
Ballston Spa - James R Birch of Alplaus, retired GE employee, died yesterday morning at Ellis Hospital in Schenectady after a brief illness. Mr Birch, 54, was born in the Town of Clifton Park, and was a member of the Alplaus Methodist Church. Survivors are his wife, Gertrude Boyce Birch; a son, James R Birch Jr, Alplaus; a brother, Howard F Birch, Alplaus; and several nieces and nephews. The funeral will be held at 2 pm Wednesday at the residence in Alplaus. Rev Herbert Roberts, pastor of the Alplaus Methodist Church will officiate.  Burial will be in the Hudson View cemetery, Mechanicville. The Birch residence will be open from 7 to 9 pm Tuesday.

Rites Set for Mrs Birch Tomorrow
Funeral services will be held tomorrow for Mrs Gertrude A Boyce Birch, 56, who was found dead at her home, Alplaus Avenue, Alplaus. The Griswold Funeral Home will be open tonight after 7 and the funeral service will be conducted there tomorrow at 11 am by Rev Charles E Wretling of Alplaus Methodist Church. Burial will be in Hudson View Cemetery, Mechanicville. Born in Clifton Park, Mrs Birch spent most of her life in Alplaus. She was an assistant clerk in the Alplaus Post Office. Mrs Birch was a member of the Alplaus Methodist Church and president of the Women's Society of Christian Service. She was the widow of J Raymond Birch. Survivors include a son, James R Birch; and two sisters, Mrs Fred Heidlauff of Scotia and Mrs Joseph Dillman of Alplaus.
