Tragedy Struck Bakers

Frances Abigail Griggs was the daughter of Charles Hammond Griggs & Sophia Ellen Jobb – the Jobb (Jobe) line has a maternal connection back to Samuel Whidden & Sophia Vincent,  out of Pictou Co, Nova Scotia.

Frances was born and raised in Vermont and by the time she was 10 years old, she was going by Abbie.    
While she worked the line at a shoe factory in the 1920s, a Harry Lindsey Baker was stationed in the Philippines with the US Navy. By 1924, they had met and married and together, they had four children before Harry died at the age of 42 as a result of chronic alcoholism.  

Abbie outlived him by 32 years but not without losing a son to a car accident at the age of 23.  Three years after her death, a son died of lung cancer at the age of 58, and later, another son was involved in a murder-suicide.

Mrs Abbie Baker
The funeral of Mrs. Abbie Baker, 74, of Arlington, will be held at 2 pm Tuesday at the East Arlington Federated Church, with the Rev Dr Mary Burton-Beinecke, interim pastor, officiating.  Mrs Baker, who died Saturday evening at Putnam Memorial Hospital in Bennington, was born Feb 10, 1901 in West Rutland to Charles and Nellie (Jobb) Griggs.  For many years she was employed at Mack Molding in Arlington and she later worked as a housekeeper.  She was a member of the Federated Church and the Enterprise Society of that church.  She belonged to the West Arlington Grange, the Senior Citizens Club and the Home Extension Group for more than 40 years.  She leaves two daughters, Mrs. Nellie Douglas of Springfield and Mrs. Edna Wyman of East Greenbush, NY.; two sons, Harry Baker of Dorset and Gardner Baker of Sunderland; nine grandchildren and a great grandchild; two sisters, Bertha Griggs of Burlington and Mrs Edith Wheeler of Stillwater, NY.  Burial will be in the family plot in MapleHill Cemetery, Dorset.  Calling hours at the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home in Arlington are tonight from 7 to 9. Memorial contributions may be made to the Federated Church through the funeral home office.

So much to bear for one family

Stanley Vincent Fisher

Stanley was one of 10 children of Samuel David Fisher & Mary Jane Gray.  The above picture the family the day of his mother’s funeral in 1930.  I wrote about Stanley’s older brother Clarence being buried alive for a while at Vimy Ridge but I don’t have much on Stanley.

Stanley first married Sarah Isabelle MacLeod, the daughter of Alexander MacLeod (McLeod) & Elizabeth ‘Bessie’ Stevens out of Londonderry.  They relocated to Ontario and after Sadie’s death in 1962, Stanley married her sister Katherine.

Funeral service was held Saturday, May 23 in South Porcupine, Ont. for Stanley V. Fisher, 82, of South Porcupine.  He died May 21 in hospital.  Born in Westville, he was a son of the late Mr and Mrs Samuel Fisher. He was predeceased by his first wife, the former Sadie MacLeod; a son Robert.  He is survived by his second wife, the former Katherine MacLeod; two sisters, Jessie, Calgary; Edna, Thunder Bay.

The Kelley family has a maternal connection to the Vincents - Helen Bonin traces back to Philip Vincent Everett & Catherine Creighton.

Helen Bonin married Charles Kelley in 1940 at Massachusetts and together they had 3 children - a set of twins who appear to have gone into medicine and John 'Jack' who died at the age of 47 after having had some success as a playwright.

Charles R Kelley - Worked at GE for 40 Years

Charles R Kelley, 77, 1926 Avon Drive, died at his residence Sunday, March 7, 1993, after a brief illness.  He was born at Somerville, Mass, March 6, 1916, a son of the late Roy and Jean Kinnaird Kelley.  Mr Kelley worked for General Electric Co in Erie for 40 years, retiring in 1981.  He was a member of Chapel of All Faiths in Lade Lake, Fla, where he was active in  community service work.  He was preceded in death by a sister, Carol Murray.  Survivors include his wife, Cecile Boyer Smith Kelley; two sons, Charles Kelley of Nevada City, Calif, and Jack Kelley of New York City; a daughter, Sheila McSweeney of Burke, Va; five sisters, Alice Pepe of Woburn, Mass, Constance Hardy of Green Acres, Fla, Jean Morris of Pinehurst, Mass, Jacqueline Corbett of Stayton, Ore, and Isabelle Gawlinski of Somerville; and six grandchildren.  No calling hours will be observed.  A private funeral service will be held Wednesday at the convenience of the family. Burial will be at Lyona Valley Cemetery in Richmond Township, Crawford County.  Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.  the Willis L Arnold Funeral Home in Townville is handling funeral arrangements.

Kelley, Helen L - Age 77, formerly of Erie, daughter of the late Alphonse and Frances Weiss Bonin.  She came to Erie in 1955 and was a longtime member of Blessed Sacrament Church. She enjoyed playing bridge and was a member of the Zukor Club Auxiliary.  She was preceded in death by a son, John "Jack" Kelly in 1996.  Survivors include a daughter, Sheila Kelly McSweeney of Burke, Va.; a son, Charles Kelly of Greenview, Calif.; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.  Burial in Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Fairview Township.

John 'Jack' Kelley - Memorial Mass Set For Tuesday
New York City - John 'Jack' Kelley, 47, of New York City, died at his home Wednesday, Jan 10, 1996.  He was born in Medford, Mass, Oct 19, 1948, a son of Helen Bonin Kelley of Erie and the late Charles F Kelley.  He was a graduate of Cathedral Prep and Boston College.  He had worked for two clothing manufacturers, first Levi-Strauss in San Francisco and Brussels, Belgium, then for Lee in London and New York.  He also worked for Merrill Lynch for several years.

He published several books and poems and had written and produced two off-Broadway plays, 'Puma's Birthday' and 'The children's Dance'.  He was lyricist for 'Eutro-Space Odyssey'.  He was a founder of the Jasper-Kelley Foundation, which gave disadvantaged children an opportunity to see live theater. Besides his mother, he is survived by a brother, Charles J Kelley of California; a sister, Shelia McSweeney of Virginia; an uncle, Joseph F Bonin of Wilmington, Del; a step-uncle, Gerald Hopkins; several other aunts and uncles; three nephews; three nieces; and several good friends, Tom Harris, Mark Mancini, Renee Dawson and Mary Ann Williams.  A funeral service was held in New York Wednesday.  Friends are invited to a Memorial Mass Tuesday at 11:30 am in St Peter Cathedral.  The Rev Monsignor William F Biebel, rector of the cathedral, will officiate. He was also known as John M Kelly.

Maloy Family

A while back I wrote about Philip Vincent Everitt & Agnes Catherine McGill – today I write about one of their children.

Agnes Elizabeth Everett was born in 1925 at New York City and she married Robert Henry Maloy – another New Yorker born at Staten Island.  Together they had 4 children; sadly, 2 died young and within a couple of years of each other.

Robert H. Maloy, 76, a former long-time resident of Redding, died Thursday at Manor Care Health Services in Chambersburg, Pa.  Mr. Maloy, of Fayetteville, Pa., was the husband of Agnes Everett Maloy.  He was born in Staten Island, N.Y., July 23, 1921, a son of Edward J. and Mabel Love Maloy.  After graduating from LaSalle Military Academy on Long Island, N.Y., he attended Manhattan College in New York City for four years and later graduated from the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, New London, and served in the U.S. Coast Guard.  Before his 1984 retirement, Mr. Maloy had been part-owner since 1946 of the family owned Bertschmann and Maloy Insurance Agency in Staten Island.  Following his retirement, he worked for five years in the accounting department of the Pope John Paul Center for Health Care in Danbury.  While living in Redding, Mr. Maloy was very involved in community affairs. He was active in various school-related organizations and civic groups and had served as treasurer of the Mark Twain Library.  He was an avid golfer and enjoyed boating.  Besides his wife of 51 years, he is survived by a son, Steven Maloy of Danvers, Mass.; a daughter, Catherine Maloy of Ridgefield; two brothers, Edward J. Maloy II and John F. Maloy, both of Staten Island; a sister, Mabel J. Randall; and two grandchildren, Emilie and Brendan Maloy of Massachusetts. Mr. Maloy was predeceased by two sons, Timothy and Michael Maloy.  Contributions in Mr. Maloy's memory may be made to the Michael Maloy Scholarship Fund, c/o Saint Anselm College, 100 St. Anselm Drive, Manchester, N.H. 03102-1310.  CALLING HOURS: Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Bouton Funeral Home, 31 W. Church St., Georgetown.  SERVICES: Wednesday at 11 a.m., a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Patrick's Church, Black Rock Turnpike, Redding Ridge. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery, Ridgefield.

Boy, 12, Drowns As Float Upends - Timothy P Malloy of Redding Knocked Unconscious; Companions Survive
Redding - A 12-year-old Redding boy drowned yesterday at 3:03 pm while fishing on a 10-foot wooden float in Umpawaug Pond.  Pronounced dead at the scene by Dr Thomas Stafford, with the emergency ambulance, was Timothy P Malloy of Topstone Road.  According to State Police Sgt Robert Keeler, who headed the investigation, the Malloy youth was fishing at the end of a 25-foot wooden dock to which was attached a 10-foot float, when a gust of wind overturned the float, knocking the boy unconscious.
Companions Survive
Two companions with the Malloy boy, Stuart Denham, 10, and David Goadby, 11, also of Redding, were thrown into the water but managed to swim to shore for help.  A neighbor, Ken Greengrass, heard the boys shouting and went to the scene.  When he didn't see the Malloy boy, he moved the float and spotted the boy's leg and pulled him onto the dock.  Emergency mouth-to-mouth resuscitation proved fruitless, and Dr Stafford ordered the body removed to the Bouton Funeral Home, West Church Street, Georgetown.  The dock is located in the rear of the home of Mrs Vivian Commons, on Chalburn Road.
Services:  Services will take place Wednesday at 9:30 am in the Bouton Funeral Home, West church Street, Georgetown, and at 10 o'clock in Sacred Heart Church with a Mass of the Resurrection.  Burial will be in St Mary's Cemetery, Ridgefield.
Born in Norwalk, he was an honor student in St Peter's School in Danbury and was a member of the Redding Boy's Club.  Survivors are his parents, Mr and Mrs Robert Everett Malloy; two brothers, Steven Malloy of San Francisco, Calif, and Michael Malloy of Redding; a sister, Catherine Malloy of Redding; his paternal grandmother, Mrs Edward J Maloy, of Staten Island, NY; and his maternal grandfather, Philip V Everett of New York City.
