Smiley & Learn


Clara Learn was the daughter of Nathan B Learn & Arvilla Cooper out of Ischua, NY.  Around 1881, she married Charles J Smiley, the son of William W Smiley & Mary Ann Sanford. Together they had 2 sons, Glessner & Granger.

Charles J. Smiley Succumbs Monday to Brief Illness
Charles J. Smiley, for many years a resident of this city, passed away suddenly, Monday evening at ten o'clock shortly after his arrival home. He was stricken while walking home from an Odd Fellows Lodge meeting. Mr. Smiley was born in the Town of Busti, Chautauqua County, and resided here for a great many years. He had been an employee in the rug department of Bradner's for nearly twenty-five years. Surviving are one son, Granger L. Smiley, at home, one brother, Abner Smiley, Jamestown, and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Smiley passed away in 1935, and his elder son passed away nine years ago. Funeral services will be held at the home, 321 Laurel Ave., Thursday afternoon at three o'clock. The Rev. A. Merritt Diettrich, pastor of the First Methodist Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Maplehurst Cemetery.

Mrs C J Smiley Passed Away At Home Here Today
Mrs Clara L Smiley, wife of Charles J Smiley, died this morning at nine forty-five o'clock at her home 321 Laurel Avenue. She had been in failing health for several months but her condition was not alarming and she died very unexpectedly. Mrs Smiley was born in the town Humphrey, daughter of Nathan and Arvilla Learn. She had been a resident of this city for many years. She was a member of the First Methodist Church. Surviving besides her husband is her youngest son, Granger M Smiley, at home; two brothers, Emmett G Learn, Auburn Me, and Edgar E Learn of Hinsdale. Funeral services will be held Monday afternoon at two o'clock at her home. Burial will be in the family plot in Maplehurst Cemetery.

Granger Morris Smiley married Florence Harriet Hatcher in 1933 and by 1940, they were divorced. Neither remarried and there were no children. Granger was a pharmaceutical manufacturer & chemist in Michigan & Ohio and moved to insurance in 1932 - he was the owner/op of the Smiley Insurance Agency & G M Smiley Real Estate Insurance.

Glessner Arthur Smiley married Parthenia M, Thenia, Gile, the son of Merrit Alphonso Gile & Viola M Raub.  After Glessner died, Thenia married Fred G Haney and returned to New York from California after he died in 1962

Funeral of G A Smiley Saturday
The body of Glessner ASmiley, formerly of Olean, who died suddenly Tuesday evening at his home in Oyster Bay, Long Island, NY, will arrive in this city tonight, and will be removed to the home of his parents, Mr and Mrs Charles J Smiley, 321 Laurel Ave. Funeral services will be held at the Smiley residence Saturday afternoon at two o'clock. The Rev C C Shedd, pastor of the First Methodist Episcopal Church, will officiate. Burial will be in the family plot in Maplehurst Cemetery. Glessner Arthur Smiley received his public school education in this city. He was graduated from the University of Buffalo, receiving his B A Degrees in Pharmacy in the College of Pharmacy in the class of 1901. For several years, Mr Smiley conducted a drug store in Allegheny, but because of ill health, sold his business. Since 1911, he has resided in Oyster Bay and during that time was identified with the Andrew Snouder and Son drug store. Mr. Smiley was for many years a member of the First Methodist Episcopal Church, this city. Surviving him are his widow, Mrs. Parthenia Gile Smiley, his parents, Mr and Mrs Charles J Smiley, and one brother, Granger M. Smiley, this city.

HINSDALE - Mrs Thenia G Haney of 4219 Gile Hollow Road, died Saturday (Feb 24, 1979) in Helmuth. Born April 30, 1883 in Hinsdale, she was a daughter of Merritt and Viola Raub Gile. She was married to Glessner Smiley who died in 1928. In 1937 she married Fred G Haney, who predeceased her in 1961. Mrs Haney had lived in San Diego, Calif, for 25 years, returning to the Olean area in 1961. She was a former member of the Hinsdale Methodist church and the CST Club of Hinsdale. Surviving are a brother, Fred M Gile of Hinsdale; three nieces and two nephews. Friends may call at the Halwig Funeral Home, 117 Hamilton St, Olean, Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm where funeral and committal services will be held Friday (March 2, 1979) at 1:30 pm. The Rev Dr Carl Schultz, pastor of Hinsdale United Methodist church, will officiate. Burial will be in Maplehurst Cemetery, Hinsdale.
