Marvin Dean Hall, the oldest, married Georgia Hansel and had 3 children - Marvin Jr, George & Hansel.  I couldn't find an obit for either Marvin, died 1987 or Georgia who died in 1989 but according to the censuses, Marvin was a Stock Exchange Broker.

Next was Philip 'Wells' Hall Jr. He married Catherine Parish Kepner and they had 3 children - Judy, Philip III & Evelyn. 

Again, no obits and according to the census, Wells was a manager at an insurance company.  Wells & Catherine are buried at the Fairview Cemetery in NJ.

Winthrop Huntington Hall, the 3rd child, married Edna McKinley McClure and had 3 children - Winthrop Jr, McClur & Stella.

Winthrop Huntington Hall, MD, 76, died Saturday, March 28, at Rahway Hospital of cancer. He was born in Cranford in 1904 and was a graduate of the Pingry School and the University of Virginia Medical School. He practiced medicine in Westfield for 45 years. Survivors include his wife, Edna Hall; two sons, Dr Winthrop H Hall Jr of San Francisco; and Dr McClure H Hall of Seattle, Wash; a daughter, Stella Hall Winslow of Fairfax, Cal; seven grandchildren; two brothers and a sister. Gray Funeral Home, 318 East Broad St handled arrangements.

Mathew Dean Hall married Elizabeth Plummer Crane and they had 2 children - Adelene & Robert. Mathew died in 1974, Libby in 1997.

Mathew D Hall, 68, of 8 Normandie Pl, died yesterday at home after a brief illness. A life-long resident of Cranford, Mr Hall was president of the Bunbury Co and the Windham Foundation with offices in Summit and Grafton, VT. He was a graduate of Pingry School and the University of Virginia. Mr Hall was a member of the Cranford Historical Society and the First Presbyterian Church and was director of the Louisiana Land Corp. Surviving are his widow, Mrs Elizabeth Crane Hall; a son, Robert C Hall, and a daughter, Mrs Adelene Vogel, both of Cranford; three brothers, Philip Wells Hall of Cranford and Dr Winthrop H Hall and Marvin D Hall of Westfield; a sister, Mrs Pauline Dickison of Grafton, and four grandchildren. Private services will be conducted today at the First Presbyterian Church by Rev Frank Goodlake. The family has requested that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Cranford Historical Society.

And the baby of the group and the only girl, Pauline Hall married Frank Herbert Dickison Jr and they had 3 children - Frank III, Charles, & Polly. Frank died in 1988 & Pauline in 2007

BRATTLEBORO -- Pauline Hall Dickison, 96, died suddenly late Tuesday night, May 1, 2007, of massive heart failure. She is survived by her three children, Frank H. Dickison III of Phoenix, Md., Charles T. Dickison of Grafton and Polly Lake of Peru, N.Y.; their spouses, 12 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Dickison was born in Cranford, N.J., on May 3, 1910, and moved full-time to Grafton in 1967 with her husband of 52 years, Frank H. Dickison Jr., who died in 1988. The past five years Mrs. Dickison had spent in a retirement community near her daughter in Plattsburgh, N.Y., and last summer moved into the Thompson House nursing home in Brattleboro. A memorial service will be held later in the summer. Donations may be made in her name to Grace Cottage Hospital in Townshend.

Philip Wells Hall

A while ago I wrote about Thomas Wells Hall & Ellen Graves - this post is about their son Philip Wells Hall.

Philip was born in 1876 at Brooklyn, NY, despite attending the Old Kings Preparatory School, in Stamford, CT, Philip did not attend Yale. Instead he went to work and became as successful as his father in his own right.

In 1897 at Brooklyn, he married Adeline Dean the daughter of Mathew Dean & Pauline Headley and they had 5 children - Marvin, Philip Jr, Winthrop, Mathew & Pauline. Then in 1932 at Plainfield, NJ, he married Lenna Mae Jackson, the daughter of George A Jackson & Ada L Smith and they had one son, Thomas Wells Hall II.

Philip Hall Dead; Press Inventor, 75

Designed and Manufactured Rapid Rotary, Multi-Color and Portable Lithograph Units

PLAINFIELD, NJ, Feb 17 - Philip Wells Hall, retired printing press manufacture, died tonight at a nursing home in New Brunswick after a long illness. His age was 75. He resided here at 312 East Seventh Street. Mr Hall began his career with the Aluminum Plate and Press Company of Plainfield, which in 1903 became the Hall Printing Press Company of Dunellen. As president, he retired in 1924, when the concern was absorbed by R Hoe & Co of New York. After the sale of his company, Mr Hall was executive in charge of sales with the Hoe Printing Press concern until his retirement in 1926. From 1942 to 1944 he served as superintendent of printing machinery in the publication department at the Raritan Arsenal.

Pioneer in Field

A designer and inventor, Mr Hall was a pioneer in the manufacture of rapid rotary lithograph presses. He was the manufacturer of the first rotary lithograph press to printing from metal plates, and subsequently, the first builder of multi-color lithograph presses. The first Hall four-color lithograph press was installed in the United States Geological Survey office in Washington. In World War I, Mr Hall designed and built for the Army Corps of Engineers in Washington the first portable unit of rotary lithograph presses for printing maps at the battlefront. A battery of twelve portable Hall presses, mounted on five-ton trucks, became a topographic printing unit attached to the Twenty-ninth Engineers. Assigned to this unit was Mr Hall's then 19-year-old son, Pfc Marvin D Hall. Mr Hall also designed and built for the United States and British Governments twelve-inch shell-boring lathes, and, for the Watervliet (NY) Arsenal, some two and three-spindle special lathes for boring the recoil cylinder of the large guns at the arsenal. For his services with the Ordnance Department during World War I, Mr Hall was commissioned a major in the branch.

Born in Brooklyn

A native of Brooklyn, and a descendant on his maternal side of the Rosencrans [sic], Grave and Huntington families, founders of Middletown, Conn, he was a son of Thomas Wells Hall and the former Ellen Josephine Graves of New Canaan, Conn. Mr Hall was a charter member of the old Executives Committee, which later became the Plainfield Engineering Society. He also had served as a director of the First National Bank of Plainfield, and was a member of the Central Atlantic Area Council of the Young Men's Christian Association advisory board at the founding of a boys' summer camp in northern New Jersey. Surviving are his widow, the former Miss Lenna Mae Jackson; their son, Thomas Wells Hall 2d, a sophomore at Yale, and, by a former marriage, four sons, Dr Winthrop Huntington Hall, Marvin D Hall, Philip Wells Hall Jr and Matthew D Hall, and a daughter, Mrs Richard Dickison. Two brothers, two sisters and several grandchildren also survive.

Philip was buried with in the family plot at the Lake View Cemetery in NY while Adeline was buried with her 2nd husband at the Rosedale Cemetery in NJ

His first wife went on to marry Henry Chapin and she died in 1957.

Cranford, NJ, July 26 - Mrs Adeline Dean Chapin of 104 Hampton Street, reportedly the first woman to drive a car here, died yesterday at her home.  She was 80 years old, the widow of Henry J Chapin. Mrs Chapin was a founder of the Woman's Association of the First Presbyterian Church and a former president of the Garden Club of Cranford. Surviving are four sons, Marvin and Dr Winthrop H Hall of Westfield; Philip Jr and Mathew D Hall of Cranford; a daughter, Mrs Frank H Dickison Jr of this place; two sisters, thirteen grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.

His 2nd wife, Lenna died in 1964 in Michigan and was buried in NY with her husband.

Selden Una Swartwout

Selden Una Swartwout was another son of William P Swartwout & Lottie M Allen who married Charlotte Ruth Burian, the daughter of James A Bruian & Anna L Shaffman.  Like his father, he had a large family - 8 children - Selden J, Keith, Wayne, Dennis, Lloyd, Darrell, Robin & Charlotte.

Selden U. Swartwout, 65, of 5420 Driftwood, Rt. 7, Janesville, died Sunday at University Hospital, Madison. He had been ill the past six months. Born March 19, 1912, at Glenburn, N.D., he was married to Charlotte Burian Sept. 17, 1934, at Watertown, Wis., and had lived in Janesville since 1948. He was employed at Fairbanks Morse Co., Beloit, for 30 years, retiring in 1967, and was a member of Evangelical Lutheran Church, Beloit. Surviving are his wife; a daughter, Mrs. John Marx, Stoughton; seven sons, Wayne, Dennis, Lloyd and Darrell, all of Janesville, Selden J., Rockford, Keith, Mystic, Conn., and Robin, Miami, Fla.; seven grandchildren; two brothers, Lawrence, Rogers, Neb., and Carl, Minot, N.D. Services are at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday at Whitcomb Funeral Home, with burial in South Burr Oak Cemetery, Friendship. Friends may call at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p m. Tuesday.

ROBIN SWARTWOUT - Services for Robin Swartwout, 26, of Alexandria, Ind., and formerly of 5420 Driftwood, Route 7, Janesville, who died Thursday in a traffic accident in Alexandria, are at 1:30 pm Saturday at Whitcomb Funeral Home. Burial will be in South Burr Oak Cemetery, Friendship, Wis. Friends may call at the funeral home from 7 to 9 tonight. Memorials may be made to the building fund of Grace Evangelical Free Church, Afton. Mr Swartwout was born Jan 25,1952, at Beloit, the son of Selden and Charlotte Burian Swartwout, and later lived in Janesville where he attended Franklin Junior High School and graduated from Parker High School in 1970. He was a member of Franklin and Parker Lettermen's clubs and a Big Eight Conference wrestling champ at Parker. Mr Swartwout had lived in Miami. Fla , from 1973 until moving to Alexandria last January, and operated an automotive business there. His father died in 1977. Surviving are his mother; a sister, Mrs John Marx, Stoughton six brothers, Wayne, Dennis, Lloyd and Darrell of Janesville, Selden J, Rockford, and Keith, Mystic. Conn; nieces and nephews.

The oldest son of William P Swartwout & Lottie M Allen was Allen Stephen Swartwout.  He married Gladys Viola Hansen, the daughter of Detlef H Hansen & Lydia E Stenning and they had 3 children - Ramona, Laurene & LaVern.

Services Held for Allen Swartwort
Funeral services were held Saturday at 2 for Allen Stephen Swarwout, 72, longtime resident of the Deering area and active in civic projects in the region for many years, who died Thursday at his home. The service was held in the Deering Lutheran Church with Rev Robert Connor officiating and burial was in the Sunset Memorial Gardens at Minot. Mr Swartwout was born Aug 3, 1899, in Bangor, Mich, to Mr and Mrs William Swartwout. At the age of two, he moved with his parents to the Glenburn area. The family remained there until 1916 when they moved to Winona, Minn. Later they moved to Milwaukee, Wisc. In 1928, Mr Swartwout returned to North Dakota and the Deering area. He farmed until 1942 when he moved into Deering. He operated the Deering Telephone Exchange and a number of other businesses in Deering. For 10 years he also worked as a heavy equipment operator in McHenry County. Mr Swartwout was a member of the Deering Village Board for nine years. He also worked on other community projects and helps to establish a water supply in Deering. He is survived by his wife, the former Gladys Hansen, whom he married Nov 7, 1928, at Deering; two daughters, Mrs Raymond (Ramona) Smith of Deering, and Mrs John (Laurene) Weber, Monroe, Wash; one son, Vern Swartwout, MInot; one sister, Mrs Violet DeCampa, Rockford, Ill; three brothers, Carl of Surrey, Seldon of Janesville, Wis, and Lawrence of North Bend, Neb; and 10 grandchildren.

Their oldest girl, Helen, died from complications of diabetes

Helen Swartwout, who died last Thursday morning was laid to rest in Fairview cemetery on Sunday afternoon. Services were conducted at the Methodist church by Rev. Wood and Rev. Deake. A large number of the friends of the family attended the services both at the church and at the grave. Helen Elizabeth, oldest daughter of Lottie and William Swartwout, was born on Feb. 2, 1904, and died July 22, 1915, being 11 years, 5 months and 20 days old. She was taken ill last December with sugar diabetes and while at times she was much better, there has never been much hope for her. The immediate cause of her death was heart failure. She was a very patient child from the first, with a smile for everyone and no one really knew what she suffered. She leaves a father and mother, grandfather, one sister and five brothers to mourn her loss, besides a host of cousins and schoolmates and other friends.

Violet married Raymond R DeCampa, the son of Samuel B DeCampa & Nettie Ross.  What is strange is that her son is not mentioned in her obit - Raymond Rosa DeCampa died in 1995 and she is listed as his mother on the SSN application.

Word was received here that Mrs Violet (Swartwout) De Campa of Mil, Wisconsin passed away last week. She had been making her home with a brother in North Bend, Nebraska. She was well known here having visited at the Carl Swartwout and the late Allen Swartwout omes. Survivors are brother, Carl Swartwout of Surrey, nieces Mrs James Bryannt, Mrs Raymond Smith, nephew LaVern Swartwout of Derring. Also two brothers at Janeville, Wis, and one brother at North Bend, Nebraska.

Lawrence married Eileen Dunne, the daughter of John M Dunne & Lenora M See and they had 4 children - Lawrence Jr, Faye D, William A & John Thomas.
