Below are the obits of two girls who were the daughters of Charles David Arbuckle and Lydia Mason Patton from Pictou Co, Nova Scotia

New Glasgow - Mrs. Edith May Riggs, 75, 221 Abercrombie Road, died Sunday in Aberdeen Hospital. Born in Lower Barney's River, she was a daughter of the late Charles and Lydia (Patton) Arbuckle. She was a member of Trinity United Church, New Glasgow, where she was a Sunday school teacher for 32 years. She was a member of the Golden Link Rebekah Lodge, Past Noble Grand Club, Past Chiefs Club, LOBA and past-president of the Ladies Auxiliary Royal Canadian Legion Branch 29. She was a member of the Golden Years, Heritage Club, and Pythian Sisters. She is survived by her husband, Warren; a daughter, Doris (Mrs. Hubert Mahnion), Auburn, Ca.; a grandchild; a sister, Loretta (Mrs. Stirling O'Donnell), Stellarton; three brothers, Willard, Merigomish; Alexander, Pictou; Norman, Downsview, Ont. She was predeceased by her first husband, Harry C. Nason; two brothers, Wesley and Raymond, and two sisters. The remains will rest in R.H. Porter Funeral Home, New Glasgow, after 7 p.m. today. Funeral service will be held at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday in Trinity United Church, New Glasgow.  Interment will be in Murray's Point cemetery, Lower Barney's River. She was buried on 22 Apr 1987 at Murray Point Cemetery in Merigomish, Pictou Co, Nova Scotia.

Thorburn - Mrs. Charles Feit died in the Aberdeen Hospital Thursday night. She was 51.  The former Catherine Arbuckle of Lower Barney River, she had lived all her married life in Thorburn.  Mrs. Feit was a member of Union Presbyterian Church and active in the women's organization of the church; a past Noble Grand of Dorcas Rebekah Lodge; a member of the PNG Club; past mistress of Prentice Sisters, LOBA; past president of the Home and School Association; and had been band mother of the New Glasgow Ceilidh Girls Pipe Band.  She is survived by her husband; two sons, Philip at Upper Stewiacke, and Fred at St. Peter's; two daughters, Emily (Mrs. Don MacGregor), Fredericton, and Shirley (Mrs. R.K. Harper), Old Barns; five brothers, Wesley, Alexander, Raymond and Willard, all of Lower Barney River, and Norman in Toronto; three sisters, Laurie (Mrs. Simpkin), Lower Barney River; Edith (Mrs. Harry Nason), California, and Jean (Mrs. William Nash), Saint John; and four grandchildren.  The remains are resting at the home and the funeral will be held from Union Presbyterian Church at 2 p.m. Sunday. Burial will be in Murray Point Cemetery She was buried on 1 Nov 1964 at Murray Point Cemetery in Merigomish, Pictou Co, Nova Scotia.

FEIT, Karl A. "Charlie" - 89, MacPhersons Mills, Pictou Co., formerly of Thorburn, died April 15, 1999, in Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow. Born in Czechoslovakia, he was a son of the late Charles and Marie Frances (Vanik) Feit. He came to Canada with his family in 1913 at the age of three. They settled in Cape Breton later moving to Stellarton and Thorburn.  At an early age, he worked in the woods with his father and then went on to work in the coal mines for some 25 years. During the depression he sold fish, meats and vegetables in Pictou and Guysborough counties and later was employed at the former Archibald's Home Furnishing Store, New Glasgow, where he sold, delivered and repaired furniture up until his retirement. He was a member of the Union Presbyterian Church and was a choir member for over 50 years. He was an accomplished accordion player and had played for various organizations and functions throughout the county. He was an ardent fisherman and loved his cottage and his friends. He is survived by his wife, the former Ann Ashton Grant; daughters, Shirley (Mrs. Ronald Harper), Emily (Mrs. Sandy MacGregor), both of Brookville; sons, Fred (Ruth), Westville; Phillip (Joan) MacPhersons Mills; 12 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; stepson, Dougald Grant (Jane), British Columbia; two step-granddaughters; two step-great-grandsons; a step-great-granddaughter, and brother, Joseph, Thorburn. He was predeceased by his first wife, the former Catherine W. Arbuckle; sister, Annie and by brothers, Frank and Albert. His remains are resting at H.W. Angus Funeral Home, New Glasgow, with visitation today from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday from the Union Presbyterian Church, Rev. Glen MacDonald officiating, assisted by Jessie Johnson. Burial will be in Murray Point Cemetery, Merigomish. Donations in his memory may be made to Union Presbyterian Church, Thorburn, or to a charity of one's choice.

A Wedding

GRANT- PATTON

A wedding of much local interest took place recently in the United Church, Vancouver, B.C., when Beulah Lily, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Patton, of New Glasgow, became the wife of Eugene A. Grant of Port Alberni, B.C. The ceremony was performed by Rev. Mr. Rodden. There were no attendants. The bride was gowned in Queen's blue sheer and her corsage was of gardenias. After a short trip Mr. and Mrs. Grant will reside in Port Alberni.

I don't know how or where these 2 maritimers met and made them leave home for British Columbia - did they elope?  How lovely if they did!

 
He was 49 and a scaler in the logging industry; she was 36 when they married and it doesn't appear that they had any children.  He died in 1957 at Creston, BC, she died at Kelowna, BC in 1985 and they are both buried at the Forest Lawn Cemetery at Creston, BC.

4 Cents Newspapers

 The Canadian Penny no longer exists so I love this obit that referenced it!

SLATER, James Carrell, Esq. - Mahone Bay, December 27, 1911 - April 26, 2004. Passed away in South Shore Regional Hospital, Bridgewater.

Jim worked his way through school by selling newspapers for four cents each and at Sydney Steel Plant for 40 cents per hour shoveling and carrying red hot slag in a wheelbarrow. 

Jim received his early education at Sydney schools and later in 1936 received his Nova Scotia Land Surveyors Certificate. In that same year, he qualified for a position of instrument man on the founding Engineering and Surveying staff of the Cape Breton Highlands National Park. He served four years on the project which ended due to the war being declared. He followed his father's footsteps, his father being the engineer constructing the Sydney Steel Plant. 

Early in 1940, Jim qualified as one of the many engineers assigned to the military overseas construction projects and was appointed to the R.C.A.F. station, Gander, NL. At this time Newfoundland was a British Crown Colony and considered to be overseas. In 1941 - 42 he was part of the engineering crew to construct the hydro-electric dam at Arvida, Que., to provide electricity for the smelting of aluminum to be used in aircraft construction. In 1942 he was appointed and placed in charge of completion of the R.C.A.F. Greenwood Air Base (No. 360TU R.A.F.) in Nova Scotia. As such, he took the Oath of Allegiance to King George VI and his heirs and also a separate Oath of Allegiance to the Royal Canadian Air Force at Eastern Air Command Headquarters in Halifax on May 1, 1942. 

At the end of the war Jim was reclassified as Technical Officer Reconstruction. The Cold War had started and the need to upgrade existing Department of National Defence facilities was obvious to meet the new threat. Jim's duties included surveying the underground tunnels at H.M.C. Naval Dockyard in Halifax, surveying the Royal Canadian Naval Ammunition Magazines at Renous, N.B. and supervising modifications to same, surveying the location site for emergency water supply at Renous, supervising construction of the storage dam and completing this project. Layout of new rhombic aerial towers to provide greater communication and surveillance at H.M.C.S. Coverdale, New Brunswick. 

Finally in 1950, Jim left the Department of National Defence to assume private practice in land surveying in the Annapolis Valley. He also pursued a number of business interests throughout North America. Jim was an early amateur (ham) radio operator with the call sign VE1XO, communicating in Morse Code.

Jim was a son of the late Charles Robert and Effie Belle (MacPherson) Slater, Sydney. He is survived by his children, Sondra, Jim and Fred; several nieces and nephews; three grandchildren; one sister. He was predeceased by his wife, Florence; one brother; five sisters. 

Cremation has taken place. A graveside service will be held Tuesday, May 25, at 1 p.m. in Garden of Rest Cemetery, Blockhouse, Rev. James Haughn officiating. No flowers by request. Memorial donations may be made to Calvary Temple, Mahone Bay.

A Couple of Husbands

The following obits are of a couple of guys who married into our line.

Henry Wentworth Flaiger & Mary O Mason were married about 1877 and spent most of their time at Charlottetown, PEI before returning to Pictou Co, Nova Scotia.  Together they had 8 children; two of their girls married the following fellas

Charles Walter Rollins married Charlotte Jane Faliger - no children

Daniel Gunn Talbot married Winnifred Catherine Flaiger - one child

Police Detail At Funeral of Patrolman Rollins
The funeral of patrolman Charles W Rollins who was attached to Station 7, East Boston, 32 years, was held yesterday afternoon at his home, 48 Princeton St, East Boston.  Rev Adolph Rossoach, pastor of the Church of Our Father, Unitarian, officiated.  A detail of 16 policemen from Station 7, commanded by Sergt Daniel Sweeney, escorted the body.  Interment was at Woodlawn Cemetery, Everett. He was buried on 16 Apr 1920 at Woodlawn Cemetery in Everett, Middlesex Co, Massachusetts. Police Officer; lived on Princeton St

Charlottetown Guardian, 6 Mar 1937
The death of Daniel Talbot occurred at his home in Charlottetown on Saturday after an illness of about ten months.  Mr Talbot was born in Pictou sixty-two years ago, a son of the late Mr and Mrs Mark Talbot.  He had lived here for many years and was well known here.  His wife, formerly Miss Winnifred Fleager, survives him, as do one daughter, Mrs Cecil Jenkins, of Charlottetown, two sisters, Mrs Matthew Hayman, of East Providence, RD and Mrs James Beales, of Providence, RI, and two brothers, George in Quebec and James in Pictou.  Mr Talbot was a shoemaker by trade and was known widely for the quality and thoroughness of his workmanship.  He was known to a large number of friends in Pictou County and elsewhere, who will hear of his passing with deep regret.  The funeral was held on Tuesday from St Andrew's Presbyterian Church, with a Masonic ceremony by New Caledonia Lodge No 11, of which Mr Talbot had been a member for many years.  

Their daughter moved to California and is buried at the Valhalla Memorial Park Cemetery in Los Angeles

MacLean & MacLean

MacLean vs McLean – once upon a time I was told the difference between Mac & Mc was about whether they were from Scotland or Ireland – Mac being Scottish – apparently that was pure hogwash.  Based on what I have seen with some of the records, I think more often than not, it was whether the writer added the ‘a’ because Mc was an abbreviation of Mac, same as M’Lean was an abbreviation – all depended on the author and how the records got read over the years.

With this family, the records went back and forth but I went with Mac given the transcription of the cemetery records.

Katie Margaret Maclean was born at Lake Ainsle, Nova Scotia to William John McLean & Jessie Ann McLean in 1893.  In 1916, she married John Edward ‘Eddy’ MacLean, the son of Angus Hector MacLean & Margaret Campbell also from Inverness Co, NS.

I took a peek at trees on Ancestry for John’s group of MacLean/McLeans and didn’t see a direct link to our line – the Inverness Co MacLeans, on both sides, come from Scotland and maybe brothers or cousins a long time ago (late 1700s/early 1800s) from the old country but no connection once they came over.  Katie stems from Laughlin MacLean abt 1803 from Scotland and John stems from a Hector McLean abt 1791 from Scotland (or MacLean).

John was married to Isabella ‘Bella’ McAulay before Katie and had 5 children; Katie and John had 11 children that I could find – this is based mostly on the various obits but it appears many were born after the last published group of vital records so more may come out later and/or solidify to which mother the kids belong.

Orangedale - Mrs Katie Margaret MacLean, 92, of Orangedale, Inverness County, died Thursday in Inverness Consolidated Memorial Hospital.  Born in North Lake Ainslie, she was a daughter of the late Mr and Mrs William MacLean.  She was a member of Orangedale Presbyterian Church.  She is survived by five daughters, Mrs Mary Pynsky, Isabelle (Mrs Neil MacKenzie), both of Toronto; Muriel (Mrs Mike Ardelli), Tillsonburg, Ont; Annie (Mrs Edward A King), Port Hastings; Mrs Johanna Repa, Hamilton, Ont; three sons, William Baddeck; John Hector and John Edward, both of Orangedale; two stepsons, Danny, Sydney; Angus, Coburg, Ont; two sisters Mrs Murray Fielding, Truro, Mrs Jane Frank, Norwich, Conn; a brother, Lewis, Truro; 23 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren.  She was predeceased by her husband, John E; a sister and several brothers.  The body is in Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Wycocomagh.  Funeral service will be held Saturday at 2 pm in Orangedale Presbyterian Church, Rev Donald MacLeod officiating.  Burial will be in Malagawatch Cemetery
