Alley - Luyster


Charles J Alley was the son of Jesse C Alley & Phebe Ann Swade. He married Sarah L Luyster, the daughter of John Y Luyster & Mary H Monfort. Together, they had 2 sons - John William & James Edward.

Charles J Alley Dies At Hospital - Trustee of LaGrangeville M E Church and Former Farmer Was 75 Years Old
Charles J Alley for the past 10 years a resident of this city, died at St Francis Hospital yesterday morning. He came to this city from LaGrangeville, where he was born April 9, 1855. Mr Alley was a trustee of the Methodist Church at LaGrangeville and president of the cemetery board. He had been a successful farmer for many years before removing to this city. He is survived by two sons, John and Edward; two brothers, John & James; and four grandchildren, Marion, Edwin, Donald and Roger.  A grandson, Wilbur Alley, was killed in an automobile accident here a couple of months ago. Funeral services will be held at his late home Thursday at 1 o'clock standard time and at LaGrangeville M E Church one hour later. Burial will be in LaGrangeville cemetery under the direction of John F Eighmie.

Alley - Augusta M W, age 83, of Town of LaGrange, NY, on Sunday, July 17, 1966 at the LaGrange Nursing Home, mother of Mrs William E (Marion) Schuler, Charles Donald and Roger L Alley. Funeral services will be held at the Trinity Methodist Church, LaGrangeville, NY, on Wednesday, July 20, 1966 at 2 pm. Interment will be in the LaGrangeville Cemetery. Funeral Arrangements are under the direction of the Roberts Funeral Home, 4 Mesier Ave, Wappingers Falls, NY. There will be no calling hours.

John Wilbur Alley Rites Held at Parents' Home
The funeral of John Wilbur Alley, who was killed in an automobile accident Sunday morning, was held from the home of his parents, Mr and Mrs John W Alley of 381 Mansion Street, Wednesday afternoon at 130 o'clock and from the LaGrangeville M E Church at 3 o'clock. Services were conducted by the Rev George [Benton] Smith, pastor of Trinity M E Church and the Rev Alexander B MacLeod, pastor of the First Congregational Church. Interment was in the LaGrangeville Cemetery in charge of A A Schoonmaker.

James Edward Alley married Sophia Alice Thorn, the daughter of John H Thorne & Jennie Phillips and they had one son, Charles Edwin Alley.

Mrs Sophia T Alley, 79, a former one-room school teacher in the Towns of Fishkill and LaGrange, died Thursday, Nov 4, in the Fairfax Hospital, Falls Church, Va, after having been in failing health for several months. Mrs Alley was the mother of C Edwin Alley, United Press International photographer, and a former Poughkeepsie Newspapers Inc sports editor and photographer. Mr Alley, his wife Caroline, and their son Edward live at 9701 Staton Drive, Fairfax.  Mrs Alley had made her home with them for the last four years. Prior to that time she had resided at 80 Grand Ave, here, and at Verbank in the Town of Union Vale. The daughter of the late Mr and Mrs John Thorne, Glenham, Mrs Alley was born on June 7, 1885. She taught in one room schools in Glenham, and Arthursburg and on July 4, 1907, was married to the late J Edward Alley, a Town of LaGrange farmer. Thereafter she worked for both Luckey, Platt and Co and the Wallace Co. In her earlier years she had been a member of the LaGrangeville Methodist Church. From the late 1940s until 1960 she lived at Verbank while continuing to own and maintain her 80 Grand Ave home.  In Verbank, she became a member of the Verbank Methodist Church and its affiliated Woman's Society for Christian Service. At her 75th birthday observance Mrs Alley was surprised to receive cards and greetings from Mrs Mamie Eisenhower, then vice President Nixon, the then Sen Keating and several other high government officials. They learned of the birthday through her son, who for years has been assigned to the White House and Capitol Hill by UPI. In addition to her son, Mrs Alley is survived by several relatives in the area, including four nephews, Eugene Champlin, George Thorn and Richard Townsend, Poughkeepsie, and Allen Champlin, Glenham, and a niece Mrs Frank Collins, also of Glenham. Funeral services were conducted at the Auchmoody Funeral Home, Fishkill, Monday Nov 8, with the Rev John Paul Hanks, who was Mrs Alley's minister at Verbank but now assistant minister at Trinity Methodist Church in Poughkeepsie, in charge of the service. Burial was in Fishkill Rural Cemetery.
