Francis E Sleight, 69, dies; Farmer was active in LaGrange
Francis E Sleight, 69, a dairy farmer who served 23 years as chairman of the LaGrange Planning Board, died Wednesday at his Overlook Road home. Mr Sleight stepped down as chairman of the planning board in January 1982 after emphysema began restricting his activities. He continued to serve as a regular [?] member of the board until Jan [15], 1987, and served a total of 32 years as a board member. During his long tenure, Mr Sleight helped guide the growth of LaGrange from a small farming town to a rapidly growing suburb. Mr Sleight's civic activities followed a family tradition of community service. His grandfather, Alexander Wheeler Sleight, served as a supervisor of LaGrange for five consecutive terms between 1689 and 1905. Mr Sleight was the last person to operate the family farm on Overlook Road. The farm had been owned and operated since 1765 by 10 generations of the family. By 1986, however, the Sleight family had become dispersed and economic realities foreclosed on options for continuing the farm. The property was sold on Dec 31, 1986. In 1988, the LaGrange Lions Club named Mr Sleight "Citizen of the Year" in recognition of his many years of public service. He was honored previously by his colleagues on the planning board in 1968 and 1982. "He was always willing to help and do whatever he could do to help the town. He was a hardworking, honest, public-spirited kind of guy. His contribution to the town was highly regard and very influential" said Howard Cramer, former LaGrange supervisor.  Long active in Republican Party politics, Mr Selight served as both a county and town committeeman for many years.  He was also a member of the LaGrange Rural Cemetery Associtaion, the Dutchess County Farm Bureau, Dutchess County Cooperative Extension and Shekomiko Lodge 458 F&AM. Mr Sleight was educated at Arlington High School and the New York Institute of Photography. His parents were Mary Elizabeth Alley and David Barnes Sleight. On Nov 27, 1947, in the Washington Street Methodist Church in Poughkeepsie, Mr Sleight married Claire Neilson, who survives. Other survivors include two sons, Peter Francis Sleight and Thomas Nell Sleight, and four grandchildren. Peter Sleight of Ashford, Conn, is an assistant state editor at the Hartford Courant and Thomas Sleight of Vienna, Austria is regional director of the US Feed Grains Council in Vienna. Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm Friday at the Parmele Funeral Home, 110 Fulton Ave, Poughkeepsie. Services will begin at 11 am Saturday at the funeral home. The Rev Herman [Harmelink] will officiate. Burial will follow in LaGrange Rural Cemetery. Donations may be made to the American Lung Association, Dutchess Columbia Branch, 46 Lincoln Ave.,Poughkeepsie, NY, 12601 or the Wonderwoods Playground Fund of Overlook Elementary School, LaGrange, NY, 12540.
