Bernhard Vollertsen & Anna Duncan

Anna Nessle Duncan was the daughter of Joseph Porter Duncan & Hannah Maria Schouten, born in 1872 at Arcola, Il.  In 1889, she married Bernhard 'Barney' Vollertsen & they had 2 children - Garnet Josephine & Bernice Lorraine.


Bernhard, whose name means bear-hardy or brave as a bear, was born in Gelting, Germany to Marquardt Vollertsen & Christina Schmidt, and immigrated with his family in 1874 to the United States, landing in New York.  By 1885, the family was in Iowa.

Anna died in 1931 and Barney in 1955 - his obit ran in the Ida County Pioneer Record, 3 Mar 1955

Of their children, Garnet Josephine Vollertsen married twice- first to singer Lloyd Thomas Weatherwax, then to Everett Charles Gray, the son of Frederick A Gray & Emily H Scoville; they had a son John Judson Gray.

Bernice Lorraine Vollertsen married Dr John Otis Weaver, the son of Ireneus N Weaver & Amy E Gilbert.  Together they had 2 children - Julia & John.

BROTHER OF W. S. WEAVER DIES
Dr. J. O. Weaver of Shenandoah, Iowa Passed Away Sunday Morning
W. S. Weaver received word Sunday morning that his brother, Dr. J. O. Weaver, eye, ear, nose and throat specialist, of Shenandoah, had passed away following an illness of three weeks. Dr. Weaver suffered a cerebral hemorrhage three weeks ago and although his condition was serious it was hoped that he would recover but later he suffered a second hemorrhage and death followed. Dr. Weaver was a graduate of the University of Iowa, with the class of 1914, where he won a letter in basketball. He was vice president of the Dilg Conservation League of Iowa and was a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and Otolaryngoly. Dr. Weaver was 44 years of age and leaves his wife and two children, Julia and John Jr. Besides W. S. Weaver of this city he is also survived by one other brother and five sisters. Mr. and Mrs. Weaver left Tuesday morning for Shenandoah to attend the funeral, which was held Wednesday.
