Wright's Woodchuck Chuck


Jane Rogers Wright, more commonly known as Jennie, married William W Jackson,  the son of Ora Jackson & Cornelia Pink.  William & Jennie had 2 children - Edna & Wright.

Shenandoah Farmer Dies On Tuesday
William W Jackson, retired Shenandoah farmer, died at his home Tuesday, May 6, 1941. He was 77 years old. Mr Jackson was born in Verbank but had lived in and about Shenandoah for 52 years. His parents were the late Ora Jackson and Cornelia Pink Jackson, who originally came from Milan, NY. Surviving members of the family are the widow, Mrs Jennie Wright Jackson and a son, Wright Jackson of Shenandoah. Funeral services will be held Friday at 2 pm, daylight savings time, from the late home. Interment will be in the Fishkill Rural Cemetery.

Mrs Jackson, Hopewell, Dies
Mrs Jennie Rogers Jackson, Jackson Road, Hopewell Junction, died at her home Sunday afternoon (June 8, 1958), after a lengthy illness. She was born in the Town of Beekman, Oct 3 1868, daughter of Thomas Wright and Pheobie Rogers. She was married Dec 11, 1889 in Arthursburg, NY to William W Jackson. He died May 7, 1941. She was educated in Town of Beekman and Arthursburg schools. She had lived at her late residence the past 68 years, going there from Arthursburg. She was a member of Wicopee Grange and had attended the Shenandoah Baptist Church. She is survived by one daughter, Mrs William Wright, Hopewell Junction; one son, Wright W Jackson, Hopewell Junction; three sisters, Mrs Mary Willard, Pasadena, Calif; Mrs John Alley, LaGrangeville; Mrs Pauline Hadden, Poughkeepsie; five grandchildren, Mrs Claude F Loos Jr, Massapequa Park, LI; Mrs Raymond Morris, Hopewell Junction; Verne W Jackson, Hopewell Junction; Roger A Wright, Hopewell Junction; Wayne B Jackson, Hopewell Junction; three great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at the Robert H Auchmoody Funeral Home, Fishkill, Wednesday at 2 pm. Interment will be in Fishkill Rural Cemetery. The Rev John Johnson of the Shenandoah Baptist Church will officiate. Friends will be received at the funeral home this evening and Tuesday evening from 7 to 9.

Of their children, the picture above is from Edna's wedding day when she married William Aaron Wright, the son of Eli Wright & Mary Lottis Hickman. Her brother Wright on the far left is next to William, followed by Edna.

William & Edna had 3 children - William Jr, Jane & Roger.  

Sgt William Aaron Wright Jr enlisted when he was 19 and was reported missing in 1945 during WWII. His remains were sent home with five others to be buried in a group grave at the Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery.

Edna died in 1977 after William Sr died in 1969

WRIGHT - July 26, 1969 at Castle Point Veterans Administration Hospital, William A Wright, resident of East Hook road, Wiccopee, husband of Mrs Edna P Wright and father of Mrs Jane Morris and Roger Wright. Funeral services will be conducted from the Robert H Auchmoody Funeral Home, Fishkill, NY on Wednesday, July 30, 1969 at 2 pm to which relatives and friends are invited. Interment Fishkill Rural Cemetery. Friends will be received at the Auchmoody Funeral Home on Tuesday, 2-4 and 7-9 pm. Beacon Post, American Legion will hold services at 8 pm Tuesday.

Wright Wesley Jackson married Edythe Sarah Ketcham, the daughter of Cornelius Ketchum & Ella C Knapp. Together they had 3 children - Dorothea, Vern & Wayne.

And lastly...

While dairy farming runs deep in this family, this little bit of fowl play had me a giggling with my Sunday coffee!

A Couple of Obits

Richard Bement Kershaw was the son of John Arthur Kershaw & Lillian A Manchester; traces back to Hezekiah Rogers Jr & Hannah Vincent.  He married Dorothy Stafford Morey, the daughter of James W Morey & Florence B Stafford. 

Richard was the owner/operator of a direct mail circulation company and Dorothy worked as a music teacher.  Richard died in 1987.

Louise H Ray, the daughter of Thomas R Ray & Estella M Flagler married Carl J Easton in 1937 at Clifton Park, NY.

They are buried at the Clifton Park Baptist Cemetery in NY.

Easton of Elnora Dies; Shenendehowa Offical

Clifton Park - Carl J Easton of RD 4 Elnora died yesterday at his home after a long illness. Mr Easton, a native of Esperance, had lived in Elnora 42 years. He was employed as business administrator by the Shenendehowa Central School District 17 years, retiring last July. Mr Easton was a member of the United Methodist Church of Cobleskill, the Mohawk Grange of Elnora, the New York State Teachers Retirement System and was a member of the original Board of Education of the Shenendehowa District. He was also a charter member of the Capital Area Chapter of New York State Association of School Business Officials. A graduate of Albany State University, Mr Easton had taught in several other school system[s] before his association with Shenendehowa District. Survivors include his widow, Mrs Louise R East; a son, James C Easton of Elnora; his mother, Mrs Nellie Easton of Esperance, and a brother, Kenneth W Easton of Scotia. An aunt and a niece also survive. The funeral service will be held at 2 pm Wednesday at the Gordon C Emerick Funeral Home, Clifton Park. The Rev James Meek, pastor of Clifton Park Center Baptist Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Clifton Park Center Baptist Church Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Clifton Park Center Baptist Church.

Sign Painter


Anna Catherine Flagler was the daughter of Henry T Flagler & Elizabeth L Jump.  Born in 1899 at Clifton Park, NY, she married Lloyd Ellis Sheffer, the son of Leonard E Sheffer & Nellie Bryan.

Leonard was born in Mechanicville, NY and was a sign painter by trade.  

The pair removed to Florida where they passed away, he in 1970, she in 1945.

She was buried with her family at the Clifton Park Baptist Cemetery in New York

Clearwater, July 28 - Funeral services will be arranged by the Moss Funeral Home today for Mrs Ann Flagler Sheffer, 45, a resident of Clearwater for the past three years, who died late yesterday at Morton Plant Hospital following a brief illness. Mrs Sheffer was a member of the Episcopal Church and is survived by her husband, Lloyd C Sheffer, Clearwater; two sons, Lt Leonard Sheffer, serving with the US Army in the South Pacific, and Richard Sheffer, Clearwater; one daughter, Miss Esther Ann Sheffer, of this city, and her father, Henry T Flagler, also a Clearwater resident.

Teaching Grocer


William Henry Kemp Jr, the son William Henry Kemp & Isabelle Nathan, was the oldest boy born in 1891 at Manhattan, NY. Unlike his father and brothers, William Henry Kemp Jr chose to serve the community in a quieter fashion, shaping the minds of next generation by being a teacher – and he owned a grocery store for a while.

According to the Pocatellian yearbook of 1929 & 1931, William held a Bachelor of Science degree and had attended Cornell University, Northwestern University, the University of Idaho, Wisconsin & California. 

He married Cecile Faith in 1916, the daughter of Albert L Faith & Ella G Owens. Based on the WWII enlistment card, William had retired by 1942, at the age of 50! 

The pair relocated to California where they passed away; she died in 1969, he in 1970.  They are buried at the Mountain View Cemetery in Pocatello, Idaho

William Henry Kemp Jr, 79, a former Pocatello school teacher, died Wednesday in Monrovia, Calif.  He came to Idaho as a young man, living in Nampa for 25 years then moving to Pocatello where he was a teacher in the Pocatello High School for many years, also owning a grocery store. He resided at Monrovia for the past 3 1/2 years. He is survived by a brother, John Kemp, Fort Lauderdale, Fla; three sisters, Mrs W M (Isabel) Hunt, short Hill, NJ; Mrs John E (Natalie) Gale, Newton Center, Mass; and Mrs Susan Connelly, Mill Valley, Calif. His wife Mrs Cicil Kemp, died April 17, 1969. He was a member of the United Methodist church; Keystone Lodge No 61, AF & AM. Funeral services will be conducted Monday at 11 am at the Henderson Funeral Chapel, with the Rev James L Airey of the United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in the family plot in Mount Moriah Cemetery. Friends may call at the Henderson Funeral Home Monday until time of services.

A Group of Go-Getters


William Henry Kemp born in 1863 to John Alexander Kemp  & Rosella Manchester, married Isabell Florence Nathan, the daughter of George W Nathan & Margaret Mitchell. Together they had 7 children – Susan Clarice, John Alexander, William Henry Jr, Natalie Cameron, John Alexander, Alan Russell & Isabel Florence.

Like his father, he was ambitious and passed this spirit onto his children as seen in his son Mayor Alan Russell Kemp from an earlier post.  

Below are the obits for William, Isabelle, & John.  John Alexander of 1899, the 2nd of his name in the family was named after his grandfather, and was a stock broker. The first John Alexander of 1888, died in infancy and was buried at Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn with his grandparents.

MAPLEWOOD, NJ, Oct 25 - William H Kemp, president of the Maplewood Bank and Trust Company, died at his home here today of heart disease at the age of 73, having been ill since the death of his wife, Isabel F Kemp, a month ago. A native of Tackahoe, NY, Mr Kemp, until his removal to Maplewood about twenty years ago, was a produce merchant in New York and at one time held the presidency of the New York Produce Exchange. He was one of the original members of the firm of Milmine, Bodman & Co, wheat exporters of New York. He was a director of the Maplewood Building and Loan Association, a former chairman of the local township committee and of the Board of Education of South Orange. Surviving are three sons and three daughters, William H Kemp Jr of Los Angeles, John A and Alan Kemp of Maplewood; Mrs John E Gale of Newton Center, Mass; Mrs Merrill Hunt of Maplewood and Mrs A B Connelly of Wellesley Hills, Mass.

MAPLEWOOD, NJ, Sept 26 - Mrs Isabel F Kemp, a charter member of the Maplewood Woman's Club and the wife of William H Kemp, president of the Maplewood Bank and Trust Company, died yesterday in Orange Memorial Hospital after a long illness. She was 68 years old. Three sons and three daughters also survive.
