Arbuckle - The Tale of Two Charles

oh no facepalm GIFMAJOR UPDATE/CORRECTION
A cousin recently contacted me to point out a discrepancy in the death record of Capt CharlesArbuckle who died in 1922 ~~ mainly, did I have the right son for Ole Willie Arbuckle and Mary Vincent?

Slap my forehead ~~ wasted research again!?!  I mean have a look at the death certificate, look what I missed!
courtesy of Pam and Ed Kirkland ~~ NS Historical Vital Stats

Who the heck are James Arbuckle and Elizabeth McDonald?

So I sat for a few minutes staring at it, stunned that I missed the obvious and debating whether to dive right in and settle it or wait till the next day because I don’t always keep the best notes - which results in my having to dig around the entire family all over again ~~ ugg, ugg, ugg

Like a gnat, it wouldn’t let go so I grabbed a tea and began....

The problem is, is that there are 2 Charles born around the same time in the area.

Capt Charles 1823-1922, who married Mary Bowen - I had him as the son of Ole Willie Arbuckle and Mary Vincent

Then there is Charles born about 1827, who married Sarah Arbuckle

Capt Charles....If you have a look at the informant, it states that Mrs Luther MacDonald is his granddaughter.  Here I did have a note, Mrs Luther MacDonald  was the daughter of William Arbuckle & Catherine/Cassie Maclean ~~ Mary Jane Arbuckle who married Angus Luther MacDonald. This proves that my Charles & Mary research is correct....HOWEVER, I have done nothing to prove he's the son of William Arbuckle & Mary Vincent.

I looked everywhere for a James Arbuckle and Elizabeth McDonald with negative results but there were trees on Ancestry so I poked around in the various trees - nothing made sense to me - even the YOB listed on the censuses made it hard at times to figure which Charles was being counted - sigh.

Around 9pm, I stumbled across the most amazing recordings that revealed everything - well most of it....

They proved that Capt Charles and James Arbuckle (1836) were brothers  BUT they were not the sons of William Arbuckle & Mary Vincent!

These 2 boys were sons of .... wait for it....James Arbuckle and Elizabeth McDonald!

In the recordings, Florence Charlotte Turner (nee MacDonld) - states that there were 2 Jims - James Sr was the father of James Jr - Jr was her grandfather and her great grandfather was the son of Charles from Scotland and Polly McGee.

Then later, she talks about William Arbuckle, son of Charles of Scotland and one of his daughters and she was clear that William Arbuckle and Mary Vincent only had one son but she doesn't name him.  She does say that there is a Charles in just about every family.

So where does that leave me?  Most of the trees on Ancestry have the Charles of 1827 as the son of William Arbuckle and Mary Vincent - I will follow their lead for now and flush out the family, but I haven't seen anything definitive so heaven help me, this could all change again!

A huge, huge, huge thank you to Pam Kirkland for reaching out!!!

Dobson - The home of Mr Adelbert W Dobson was saddened today when death came and claimed the young wife and mother.  For a number of days her life had been despaired of, but she had been so hopeful and confident of recovery that it was thought possible the hopes might be realized.  Blood poisoning had set in following the birth of a child about two weeks ago.  Mr Dobson had many friends in the city, for she was of winning personality and sweet disposition.  She was the younger daughter of Mr and Mrs D W Liar., who reside six miles west of the city.  She was only 21 years of age and seventeen of those years had been spent in this county, for her parents moved here when she was a very little girl, from Brookfield, Mo, where she was born.  She attended the city schools for some time and then
began work at the state normal at Cedar Falls.  Never strong, she was not able to continue her studies and returned home.  On Dec 23, 1896, she was married to Mr Dobson  Two daughters are left to the bereaved husband, one, Frances Marie, 2 years old, and the baby of a few weeks.  Mrs Dobson was from childhood an earnest Christian worker, a member of the Presbyterian church.  The funeral will be held Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the residence, No 109 West State street.  Rev Russell having charge of the services.

Are these Whiddens Scottish?

Samuel Whidden 1813-1892
The Vincents are intertwined with the Whiddens in more than one way.  Do you remember Grandma Whidden?  How about the fella in this picture, Samuel Whidden?

Samuel Whidden married Sophia Vincent and together they had 15 children but what is most interesting for today is that Samuel Whidden was a twin!

Twin to the father of another connection to our family - that is John Whidden (1813-1874).  John married a Jessie McLellan in Scotland and their first son, Alexander, was born there as well despite all the records to the contrary.

Alexander Whidden 1839-1926
Alexander ended up marrying Sarah Stevens, the daughter of Joshua Stevens & Lydia Vincent and together they had 7 children.

Sarah Whidden nee Stevens 1844-1933
These amazing photographs were shared by Ancestry user FedePeinado – thank you so much!

Is there a resemblance to Samuel?

And does this mean he is technically a Scot along with his children?  Or a misplaced Maritimer?  A mind-tickler!

Alexander and Sarah are buried at the New Annan Bell Gift Cemetery in Nova Scotia.

A 20th Century Woman

When I think of days gone by, and the fashion at the turn of the century, this is what I see in mind’s eye and I was tickled to find this picture shared by Charles Handren on Ancestry!
(all the pictures attached are courtesy of Charles)

Let me introduce you to Mary Elizabeth ‘May’ Stevens.   She was born in 1878 in Springhill, Nova Scotia to George Henry Stevens and Ruth Anne McLean.

Her family, like many drawn to Attleboro in the early 1900s, worked as jewelers – polishers, tool makers, bench hands, etc – and Mary was no different.

She worked as a bench hand and I imagine this is where she met her husband – one Francois Xavier King and together they had 6 children.

The King Clan from left to right - Ruth, Charles, Frank, Edward, Mary, Maida & Marion.  Frank Jr died as a baby.

In 1953 they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary and she looked as beautiful as she did in her youth!

Frank died in 1959, Mary 'May' died in 1961 and they buried together at the Plainville Cemetery in Massachusetts.
