'Eureka Village' by Helen Opie |
Along the west bank of
the West Branch of the East River in Pictou County, Nova Scotia, there is a
town called Eureka – a village built up mainly as a result of the woolen
mill and the mines in Ferrona.
It was connected to other
towns such as New Glasgow, Stellarton, Riverton and Hopewell by the
InterColonial Railway. The ICR, one of
the first Crown Corporations in Canada became the Canadian National Railway
around 1918. In Eureka, the freight station
was at Eureka Siding.

Charles Magee was a farmer’s
son from Merigomish married a Mary Arbuckle and later, the young family relocate to Eureka-Ferrona where Charles found work
with the local iron works – back breaking work which later affected his lungs.
The bottom fell out of Ferrona when the iron company closed shop and moved to Sidney, NS; however, his son worked for the railroad.
