Arbuckle Family

Capt Charles Arbuckle (abt 1823) was the son of 'Old Willie' Arbuckle and Mary Vincent and he was a mariner who fished and transported goods throughout the maritime islands.

The Arbuckles established The Ponds, NS.  The first to Nova Scotia was Charles Arbuckle (abt 1751) who hailed from Scotland and he married a Polly McGee/MaGee.

Polly was the first white child born in the Pictou area and it is said that she was raised by Native Indians after her father and brother drowned; her mother had already passed away.  Barney's River, NS is named after her father Barnabas MaGee/McGee.

The Arbuckles also settled on PEI including a pair of brothers, John & Charles who created "Arbuckles Coffee", the first one-pound bag of roasted coffee for sale after the Civil War in North America; before this, coffee was sold green and had to be roasted at home.  It caught on and their Ariosa blend is still known as the 'Original Cowboy Coffee".  The company was broken up around 1930 but they continued to produce their "Yuban" blend.  The company is now ran out of Arizona.

  1. Hello My name is Shelly Arbuckle I am a direct decendent of Charles Arbuckle and Polly McGee. So Hello cousin! Lol ... I noticed a couple of issues with your line. Polly McGee was not the first white child born in the area, her younger sister was. Polly was born in Rogers Hill, N.S. where the family first moved when they emigrated from the U.S. Also, the date for Charles is at best a guess by many as to when and where in Scotland he was born. There are no records found as yet to support it. But we do know he was a member of the 82nd Regiment of Foot ( aka Hamilton's Own) that was barracked at the Citadel in Halifax post U.S. Revolutionary War. As the King could not afford to pay them, feed them or ship them back to their homeland, they were given land in the Pictou Land Grant of 1783. Charles was a Cpl so he recieved a whopping 200 acres. Many sold their land without seeing it, and used that funding to return to Scotland and England. I have a fairly detailed tree for the Arbuckles and another, not as lengthy, for the McGees if you would like a copy. Their are in .pdf format. My email is mestella.sd@gmail.com.

    2. So many Arbuckles... I have been trying to find a history of James Arbuckle of Salmon River born in 1797 died in 1861. His wife was Sarah Spears. He was my great, great, grandfather. Charles T Arbuckle 1879-1922 was a sibling of my Grandfather Bruce Albert Arbuckle.

  2. I believe this is the same Charles Arbuckle who was granted land up at Cape George NS. There were a few soldiers who had original land grants who then got grants of land up at Cape George. I'm not sure he ever lived up here but owned land. I have the land grant papers. Can anyone confirm this?
