Arbuckle Family

Capt Charles Arbuckle (abt 1823) was the son of 'Old Willie' Arbuckle and Mary Vincent and he was a mariner who fished and transported goods throughout the maritime islands.

The Arbuckles established The Ponds, NS.  The first to Nova Scotia was Charles Arbuckle (abt 1751) who hailed from Scotland and he married a Polly McGee/MaGee.

Polly was the first white child born in the Pictou area and it is said that she was raised by Native Indians after her father and brother drowned; her mother had already passed away.  Barney's River, NS is named after her father Barnabas MaGee/McGee.

The Arbuckles also settled on PEI including a pair of brothers, John & Charles who created "Arbuckles Coffee", the first one-pound bag of roasted coffee for sale after the Civil War in North America; before this, coffee was sold green and had to be roasted at home.  It caught on and their Ariosa blend is still known as the 'Original Cowboy Coffee".  The company was broken up around 1930 but they continued to produce their "Yuban" blend.  The company is now ran out of Arizona.

From Queen Elizabeth II to the Grand Ole Opry!!

Yeehaw!!!
Don & Jim Haggart
These two brothers were inducted into the Nova Scotia Country Music Hall of Fame - Don and Jim Haggart - rubbing shoulders with other maritime musicians such as Rita MacNeil, Hank Snow, and Ann Murray!!

The brothers were born in Pictou Co, Nova Scotia to James Garvin Haggart and Ruth Copeland MacDonald.

The connection to the Vincents is via the maternal grandmother, Sarah ‘Annie’ Arbuckle back to Old Willie Arbuckle and Mary Vincent.

Jim, the older of the two, began his music career with a rock band he formed called the "Blue Cats."  They played from 57-60 through out the Maritimes and Montreal.
Jim Haggart, Reg O'Hagen, Harold Bordon, Bob George, Bob Ferguson

Around 1964, Don got his first guitar.  He practiced and practiced till the day he auditioned in Bob Gladney, Sr's kitchen and became the lead singer for "The Country Senators."

In 1971, the brothers decided to work together and headed to Toronto.  They landed a record deal and recorded their first hit "I'm Coming Home".

They went on to perform for Queen Elizabeth II in PEI during her visit in 1973, and onto the Grand Ole Opry!

They were nominated for Junos 1974-1975 however, by the end of the 70s, Don wanted to stay home with his family.  They continued their music careers in different directions.  Jim continued to perform and travel, Don wrote and performed near home.

Sadly, Jim passed away in 2006 - he is buried at Murray's Point Cemetery in Lower Barney's River, Pictou Co, Nova Scotia

Don still performs locally and continues to get recognition for his musical talents.

Loss of a family

Serena Crawford’s obit describes her as a strong woman who loved her family deeply.  Where others may have cracked, God blessed her with fortitude.

Russell Ashford Crawford, the son of Samuel Ashford Crawford and Annie Mabel Vincent married Serena Grace Carter in 1936 and went on to have 5 children.  They lost little Madeline about a month after she was born.

Russell was a hard-working lumberman from the Cumberland area of Nova Scotia who died in a car crash in April of 1977.

But fate was not done with this little clan.

Glorious Wills - John Vincent 1707-1802

The problem with this thing called genealogy, or the reward, is that as my skills improve, I find myself going back to make sure the rest is right - ug!?!

I am knee deep in it and if I could ever stop getting sucked down the rabbit hole I might be able to move on!

I have yet to explore beyond John Vincent of 1707 - my first group since leaving my direct line.

With a lot of trial and error, I figured out how to navigate the collection of wills on FHL and BOOM!  John's will had all his children!  Well, he might have had more who died but I can only go off the will.

In it, he declares portions for the heirs of two of his deceased daughters, Jemima & Margaret.  He names Hannah's husband as one of his executors, Hezekiah Rogers and he names his daughters Phebe Rosekrans and Ruth Cornell as beneficiaries and Elizabeth and the boys!

I have since flushed out that Jemima had married Zophar Rogers, Hezekiah's brother; Elizabeth had married a Stephen Ferguson; Ruth had married John Cornell; Phebe our Capt Benj Rosekrans; Capt Jerry married twice; Philip married Catherine Halleck (which people have confused with another Philip eeps); Margaret married a Joseph Beck; and John a girl named Ketura.

Now I know why I have had so many Rosekrans stories, I am stuck there!
