One of the saddest things I have stumbled across….

William Noel Prosser was one of three children born to William Franklin Allison & Mabel IreneHegeman ~~ the daughter of Peter Johnson Hegeman Jr & Antha Rafella Dolson (previous blog)

William Sr was a Professor who died in 1927 while Mabel outlived him and died in 1970.  The other two children were spinster sisters Katherine and Muriel

Peter J Hegeman Jr & His Clan

I need to start this with thanking a Find A Grave user named Maggie who provided obituaries, biographies and pictures for the various Hegeman family members on Find A Grave.

Peter Johnson 'PJ' Hegeman Jr

PJ Hegeman was a glove manufacturer like his father and married Antha Rafella Dolson in 1870.  They had six children but only 5 have been found with names.

Antha Hegeman (nee Dolson)

Based on the 1875 WI census which indicated 2 males and 2 females, I believe the missing child was a girl who died before 1880 and the other child born before 1875 was their son Harry.  Then there was Myrtle Antha & William A who died young.

Brookings Register, Sep 1923
Col. H.A. Hegeman arrived in the city Saturday morning from the west with the body of his father, P.J. Hegeman, who recently passed away at Pendleton, Oregon.  He was met by his brother, J.A. Hegeman, friends of the family and members of the Masonic fraternity, the remains being at once conveyed to Greenwood cemetery where the last sad rites were conducted by Rev. S.L. Hammond of the First Presbyterian church and the officers of Brookings Lodge No. 24, A.F. & A.M., with Worshipful Master E.R. Series in charge.  Mr. Hegeman was an honored member of Brookings lodge and his picture with that of his father and that of his son, H.A. Hegeman, still hangs on the wall of the lodge room, showing three generations of Masons and all members of the local lodge.  It was therefore quite fitting that the final rites be said by his fraternal brothers.  The deceased settled on a homestead in Sherman township in 1878 where they lived for some time and then moved to White where Mr. Hegeman engaged in the manufacture and sale of gloves and mittens on a small scale. In 1896 he moved his family and factory to Brookings where he enlarged his field of operations and educated his children, all of whom are graduates of State college.  The Pendleton East Oregonian, in speaking of his death, has the following to say:  Peter Johnson Hegeman, aged 74, a resident of Pendleton since 1915, died at his home here yesterday after a long illness.  Mr. Hegeman was born in Mayfield, New York, May 10, 1849.  With his parents he moved to Sparta, Wisconsin, in 1864, when he was 15 years of age.  On October 9, 1870, he was married to Antha Dolson and to them were born six children, three of whom died in early childhood.  In 1877, he moved with his family to Dakota, where he resided until 1910, when they came from Brookings, South Dakota, to Portland.  Surviving him are his widow, Mrs. Antha Hegeman, three children, Colonel Harry A. Hegeman of Portland, Mrs. Frank E. Boyden of Pendleton and Mrs. W. F. Allison of Seattle; a sister, Mrs. Sarah Hendricks of Chicago, and a brother, John A. Hegeman of Brookings.  Seven grandchildren survive also.  In his early youth Mr. Hegeman became a member of the Methodist Episcopal church, later joining the First Presbyterian church of Brookings.  On coming to Pendleton he joined the First Presbyterian church of this city and for several years has served on the session of this church.  During his entire life his devotion to his church and his Christian living have been marked characteristics.  Funeral services were held at the home this afternoon with Rev. G. L. Clark, pastor of the Presbyterian church officiating, after which the body was taken by Col. Hegeman to the old home at Brookings, South Dakota, where he will be laid to rest beside a son and daughter. Interment will take place on Saturday.

Mrs. Eva Wright passed away at her home in this city last Sunday afternoon, after an illness extending over several months. The funeral was held from the M. E. church yesterday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Black, and a large concourse of friends were present to pay a last tribute. The Eastern Star and Degree of Honor marched to the church in a body. Interment was made in Greenwood.  Mrs. Wright was born in Saratoga, New York, April 30, 1847, being at most 64 years of age at the time of her death.  At 15 years of age she was converted, and joined the Methodist Episcopal church in Gloversville, New York. In 1864, when 17 years old, she moved with her father's family to Sparta, Wis., where in 1867 she was married to the Rev. W. S. Wright, then pastor of the First Methodist Episcopal church of La Crosse, Wisconsin.  After a most happy married life of about 14 years, Mrs. Wright was widowed. Mr. Wright died in Dodgeville, Wis., August 25, 1881. Immediately after the death of her husband Mrs. Wright came to Brookings and has made this her home since that time, over 30 years.  Mrs. Wright had two children, one of whom is Dr. Geo. M. Wright, who is practicing medicine in Denver, Col. The other, Willie B., died in 1880 at five years of age. Like her own to her were the two children of Mr. Wright's first family, Mrs. W. J. Hocking of Waupaca, Wis., and Dr. C. D. A. Wright of Minneapolis, who is just now in Florida. Two brothers, Mr. P. J.  Hegeman and Mr. J. A. Hegeman, and two sisters, Mrs. J. H. Hendricks, of Dubuque, Iowa, and Miss Jennie Hegeman remain to mourn their love.  From the first, Mrs. Wright took an active interest in the social and religious life of the city. She was always an officer of the church, was on the list of teachers in the Sunday school, was for a long time president of the Ladies' Aid society. She was president of the Woman's Foreign Missionary society at the time of her death. She was invariably at her place in the prayer meeting, and the more public services of her church until prevented by failing health. She was a member of the Eastern Star and the Degree of Honor, and though she appreciated very highly the advantages of these orders, she always placed the enjoyments and duties of the religious life before all other obligations and pleasures.

Peter Johnson Hegeman - A Royal Glove Maker

William - Prince of Orange - wikipedia
The Hegeman line hails from the Netherlands reportedly descendants of William, Prince of Orange ~~ royalty!

Three Hegemen brothers left Holland for the new world – John, Adrian and Peter – once here, they went off to create their families & fortunes.

The focus of this blog is on a son of  John Hegeman.

Around 1818, John Hegeman married Eve Johnson from our lines ~~ the daughter of Peter Johnson & Margaret Rogers which traces back to Hezekiah Rogers & Hannah Vincent; they had 9 children and Peter Johnson Hegeman was the oldest boy.

Peter married Catherine Allen who hailed from Albany, NY and whose mother, Magdaline Houghtailing, supposedly had a maternal connection to a Lord Etherington ~~ royalty!  Ok, I am caught up in the Harry/Meghan mania lol.

Peter & Catherine eventually settled in Gloversville, New York where Peter spent some time mastering his craft - glove making.  For those who aren't in the know, Gloversville came by its name literally for being the glove making hub in Fulton Co, NY in the early 1800s, before that it was known as Stump City because of all the trees that had been cut down!

Peter eventually moved his family to Sparta, WI where he manufactured gloves and other soft-leather goods until he once again relocated his family - this time to South Dakota - well back in the day it was known as Dakota Territory.  The family settled there because Peter was able to take advantage of the land patents that were being sold and obtained 160 acres of land in White.  However, once Catherine died in 1892, he moved in with his daughter in Brookings, SD.

Peter and Catherine were married in 1842 and together they had 9 children.  They, and many of their children, are buried at the Greenwood Cemetery in Brookings, SD.

The Daily Times, Mon, 21 Jan 1901
Peter J Hegeman, Sr, a former well known citizen of Gloversville, died recently in South Dakota, aged eighty-two years.  He was a prominent Mason.  Two sons and three daughters survive.  His wife died several years ago.
