Sisters Marry Brothers

The Killen family links back to the Vincents via David ‘Scott’ Killen & Maria Vincent – the daughter of George Vincent & Sarah Morrison.  

They were married only 7 years before he died.  Scott & Maria lost their oldest boy, George, at 13 years of age; their only daughter, Lulu, died at the age of 42; leaving the youngest boy Murray only 8 months old when his father died.

Murray Scott Killen and Frances ‘Patience’ Letcher were married in 1908 and had 3 girls – Duretta, Hazel & Iva.  

Iva Grace Killen married James Vincent Chambers but the other 2 girls fell for a couple of MacBurnie brothers.


Duretta the oldest, married John Alexander MacBurnie, the son of Cyrus Macburnie & Mary Patterson. Hazel married John's brother Alfred.

FIVE ISLANDS - Mrs Duretta MacBurnie, 71 of Five Islands died Wednesday, Dec 17, 1980 at South Cumberland Memorial Hospital, Parrsboro.  Born in Five Islands, she was a daughter of the late Murray and Patience Letcher Killen.  Surviving are two daughters Greda, Mrs Donald Selkirk, Five Islands and Marjorie, Mrs Austin Lewis, Riverview, NB; a son, Royden, Dartmouth; two sisters, Grace, Mrs Vincent Chambers and Hazel, Mrs Alfred MacBurnie, both of Five Islands; 14 grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.  She was predeceased by her husband, John.  The remains rested at Smiths Funeral Home, Parrsboro. Funeral service was held at 2pm on Friday in Peniel United Church, Five Islands, Rev Parker Matheson officiating, with burial in Baptist Cemetery, Five Islands.

Five Islands ­ Alfred E. MacBurnie, 80, of Five Islands, died Wednesday in Parrsboro Hospital. Born in Five Islands, he was the son of the late Cyrus and Mary Patterson MacBurnie. He was a retired farmer and lumberman. He is survived by his wife, the former Hazel Killen; three daughters, Joyce (Mrs. Walter Grue), Halifax; Frances (Mrs. Harold Eagles), Lower Five Islands; Leora (Mrs. Kenneth Paul), Calgary; two sons, Glenford, Quesnel, B.C.; Ronald, Five Islands; four sisters, Leona (Mrs. Norman Brown),Worcester, Mass.; Alice (Mrs. Bert Aylward), Five Islands; Josephine (Mrs. Earl Weir), River Hebert; Ethel (Mrs. Ronald Roberts), Moose River; one brother,Horace, Worcester, Mass.; 16 grandchildren; three great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his first wife, Myrtle Lockhart; one son, Roland; one brother, John. The body is at his residence, Five Islands. Funeral service will be Saturday at 2 p.m. In Periel United Church,Five Islands.

MacBURNIE, Hazel E. - 93, Wharf Road, Five Islands, passed away peacefully Thursday, February 9, 2006, at home, surrounded by her family. Born in Five Islands, she was a daughter of the late Murray and Patience (Letcher) Killen. She is survived by stepdaughters, Joyce Grue, Bass River; Frances Eagles, Five Islands; Leora Lewis (Royal), Economy; stepsons, Glenford (Maxine), Quesnell, B.C.; Ronald (Beth), Five Islands; sister, Grace Chambers (Vincent), Five Islands; several step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Alfred in 1978; stepson, Roland; sister, Duretta. Visitation will be held 2-4, 7-9 p.m. today in Smith's Funeral Home, Parrsboro. Funeral 2 p.m. Saturday in Peniel United Church, Five Islands, Rev. Florence Antle-Brison officiating. Burial to follow in Five Islands Baptist Cemetery.
