Washington Browns



Once upon a time, a carpenter from Nova Scotia named Murray Vincent married a Susan Henderson and then relocated to Washington where they had 2 children – Pearl & Ethel.

Ethel married Donald Edgar Harmon but they divorced and she died at the age of 39.

Pearl married James Cleveland Brown and had 10 children – oy!

James was a dairyman from Kansas and married Pearl in 1909 at Spokane, WA - he died in 1935.  She died in 1968 


Of their children,  there was one boy who died at the age of three but the first name is unknown, his middle name is Vincent and he died in 1913 - wonder if being the oldest his first name was James after his father? Then Truman, Orville, Ethel, Melvin, Ersel, Norma, Alma, Betty and Kenneth.

How did that happen?


John Franklin Forbes was the son of Harold Forbes and Bessie Vincent and died in 1983 in Montana.  He married twice - first to Gladys L Bogle and then Phyllis Cooper.  Gladys and John had one son together and she was last married to James Robertson .......but what the .....

Funeral services for Gladys Lois Robertson, 39, Rt 1, wife of James J Robertson, will be conducted at 2 pm Friday in Evenson Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Gene Neeley will officiate.  Interment will be in High Valley Memorial Gardens.  Mrs. Robertson was found dead Wednesday in a parked car near the Zillah City Park, an apparent victim of asphyxiation, according to Yakima County officials.  She was born September 5, 1927 in Grove, Oklahoma and came to Ellensburg from Toppenish in 1944.  She moved to Albany, Oregon in 1956, returning to Ellensburg in 1962.  Mrs. Robertson had worked as a check-stand operator at Safeway's and for years was employed as office receptionist for Dr. William Pearl.  Surviving are her husband, to whom she was married April 19, 1956 in Coeur D'Alene, Idaho; three sons, William Allen Hagerman, Albany, Oregon, John David Forbes and Scott James Robertson at the family home; three daughters, Mrs. Virginia Tucker, Ellensburg, Peggy Rae and Rebecca Jane Robertson at the family home; and her father and stepmother, Mr. and Mrs. Stewart Vogle, Mesa, Arizona.

Sisters Marry Brothers

The Killen family links back to the Vincents via David ‘Scott’ Killen & Maria Vincent – the daughter of George Vincent & Sarah Morrison.  

They were married only 7 years before he died.  Scott & Maria lost their oldest boy, George, at 13 years of age; their only daughter, Lulu, died at the age of 42; leaving the youngest boy Murray only 8 months old when his father died.

Murray Scott Killen and Frances ‘Patience’ Letcher were married in 1908 and had 3 girls – Duretta, Hazel & Iva.  

Iva Grace Killen married James Vincent Chambers but the other 2 girls fell for a couple of MacBurnie brothers.


Duretta the oldest, married John Alexander MacBurnie, the son of Cyrus Macburnie & Mary Patterson. Hazel married John's brother Alfred.

FIVE ISLANDS - Mrs Duretta MacBurnie, 71 of Five Islands died Wednesday, Dec 17, 1980 at South Cumberland Memorial Hospital, Parrsboro.  Born in Five Islands, she was a daughter of the late Murray and Patience Letcher Killen.  Surviving are two daughters Greda, Mrs Donald Selkirk, Five Islands and Marjorie, Mrs Austin Lewis, Riverview, NB; a son, Royden, Dartmouth; two sisters, Grace, Mrs Vincent Chambers and Hazel, Mrs Alfred MacBurnie, both of Five Islands; 14 grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.  She was predeceased by her husband, John.  The remains rested at Smiths Funeral Home, Parrsboro. Funeral service was held at 2pm on Friday in Peniel United Church, Five Islands, Rev Parker Matheson officiating, with burial in Baptist Cemetery, Five Islands.

He is survived by his wife, the former Hazel Killen; three daughters, Joyce (Mrs. Walter Grue), Halifax; Frances (Mrs. Harold Eagles), Lower Five Islands; Leora (Mrs. Kenneth Paul), Calgary; two sons, Glenford, Quesnel, B.C.; Ronald, Five Islands; four sisters, Leona (Mrs. Norman Brown),Worcester, Mass.; Alice (Mrs. Bert Aylward), Five Islands; Josephine (Mrs. Earl Weir), River Hebert; Ethel (Mrs. Ronald Roberts), Moose River; one brother,Horace, Worcester, Mass.; 16 grandchildren; three great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his first wife, Myrtle Lockhart; one son, Roland; one brother, John. The body is at his residence, Five Islands.
