Harriet & Wellington Smith


The last 2 children of  Silas Smith & Emma Button are Harriet Pearl Smith & Wellington C Smith.  Harriet married Irving Daniel Reed and had 3 children - Robert, Donald & Loren.  Wellington married Natalia Arlene Cook and had 3 children as well - Douglas, Arlene & Welna.

Funeral services for Mrs Harriett S Reed of 125 Calhoun St, Edgewater, formerly of Schenectady, NY, will be held on Monday at the Andrews Funeral Home, 1196 State St, in Schenectady. Mrs Reed died yesterday at Knollwood Nursing Hoe at the age of 76. Born in New York, Mrs Reed had lived in the county for the past three years and attended Parkwood Methodist Church. Survivors include three sons, Robert Reed of Edgewater, with who she made her home; Donald Reed of Round Lake, NY and Loren Reed of Hudson Falls, NY. Also 17 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.  Arrangements are under the direction of the John M Taylor & Sons, 147 Duke of Gloucester St.

Irving D Reed, Former Resident of Area, Dies
Irving Daniel Reed, 66, a former resident of Clifton Park, died Monday at his residence 101 Edward St, Schenectady.  Mr Reed was born at Clifton Park and had lived there for seven years.  He was employed as a machinist at General Electric Co in Schenectady.  Survivors include his widow, Mrs Harriet Smith Reed; three sons, Robert I Reed, Schenectady; Loren K Reed, Glens Falls; Donald J Reed, Round Lake, and 14 grandchildren.  The funeral will be tomorrow at 2 pm from the Baxter Funeral Home, 40 N Brandywine Ave, Schenectady, with Rev G Lewis Porter officiating.  Interment will be in Park View Cemetery, Schenectady.

Funeral Conducted For Timothy Reed
Round Lake - The funeral of Timothy Leroy Reed, who died Friday night at Albany Hospital, was held today at 2 pm at the Morris Funeral Home, Round Lake. The Rev Paul W Ives, Methodist pastor, officiated. Burial was in Denning Street Rural Cemetery. The child was born July 2, 1958, the son of Mr and Mrs Donald Reed, Round Lake. Survivors in addition to his parents are a brother, Richard; two sisters, Donna and Vicki; his maternal grandparents, Mr and Mrs Leroy DeGroff, Round Lake, and his paternal grandmother, Mrs Irving Reed, Schenectady.

Wellington C Smith of Division Street, died Sunday morning following a heart attack while at work in the Dake milk plat, Saratoga Springs. He was born at Ballston Lake, Feb 7, 1896. Mr Smith was formerly employed for 10 years in the Elmer E Cook ice business in Ballston Spa. He is survived by his wife, a son, Douglas Irving, two daughters, Arlen Corabel and Wilna June Smith, a sister, Mrs Irving Reed, Ballston Lake, and three nephews, Robert, Donald and Loren Reed. The funeral will be held at 2 pm Wednesday from the Wheeler Funeral Home.  Rev Harry J Swan, Presbyterian Church pastor, to officiate. Burial will be in Crescent Cemetery. The funeral home will be open Tuesday evening.

Mrs Natalia Cook Smith - a recent resident of the Embury Apartments in Saratoga Springs, died Jan 27, 1974. A lifelong resident of Ballston Spa until her recent move to Saratoga Springs, Mrs Smith is survived by two daughters, one son, a sister, 12 grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. Interment in the Ballston Spa Village Cemetery.

Silas M Smith & Emma Button



The last of the children for Hiram Smith & Phebe Ann Smith is Silas M Smith.  Born in 1859 at Halfmoon, he married Emma F Button, the daughter of Alexander Button & Harriet Clute Philo. Together, they had 5 children - Alexander, Romema, Harriet, Royal & Wellington but only Harriet & Wellington married.

Funeral services for Silas Smith, found dead in a chair next to the living room stove at his home below East Line on the Jonesville Road, about 11 o'clock yesterday morning by Roy Curtis Miller, a neighbor, will be conducted at 2 o'clock tomorrow afternoon at the late residence. The Rev E W Gould, Methodist Church pastor of Round Lake, will officiate and burial will be at Crescent.

Mrs Silas M Smith - Emma F Button, wife of Silas M Smith, of East Line, died last night in the Albany Hospital following a lingering illness. Mrs Smith was born January 7, 1861 in the Town of Halfmoon and had resided in this vicinity for a number of years. She leaves, besides her husband, one daughter, Mrs Irving D Reed of Schenectady; one son, Wellington G Smith of this place; one brother, Asil Button of Elnora, and five grandchildren. Notice of funeral will appear later.

Alexander B Smith, aged 31 years, died of influenza, Monday, Dec 23, at the home of his parents, Mr and Mrs Silas Smith, in the town of Malta. He leaves besides his parents, a sister, Mrs Irving Reid, of Schenectady and two brothers, Royal and Wellington Smith, of East Line. Funeral Thursday at 11 am at the home.  Burial in the family lot at Crescent.

The many friends of Miss Romema Smith were pained to learn of her sudden death on Monday. To all appearance she was as well as usual. She helped her mother about the house, ate a hearty dinner and after the work was done, went into the sitting room and sat down. In a few minutes, she fell to the floor dead. She was the eldest daughter of Mr and Mrs Silas Smith of East Line, former residents of this place. Miss Smith had a most loveable disposition and had many friends. Besides her parents she is survived by one sister, Mrs Irving Reed of Grooms, three brothers, Alexander, Roy and Wellington of East Line, who have the heartfelt sympathy of their many friends. Her remains were brought to Crescent Thursday afternoon and interred in the Union Cemetery.

Royal H Smith died suddenly yesterday afternoon at 3 o'clock at the Ellis Hospital, Schenectady following an operation. He was twenty-seven years of age. Mr Smith is survived by his parents, Mr and Mrs Silas Smith, one sister, Mrs Hattie Reed of Schenectady; one brother, Ellick Smith of Ballston Lake. Funeral services will be held Thursday morning at 11 o'clock from the residence of his father, Silas Smith, one mile south of East Line. Burial will be at Crescent.

The End of a Line



 

Another child of Hiram Smith & Phebe Ann Smith was Jennie Mathera Smith.  She married her sister-in-law's brother, Merritt N Philo, a son of Nehemiah Philo & Jane Ann Bancus.  They had 2 sons, yet both died unmarried.

The death of Merritt N Philo occurred yesterday afternoon at his home in Halfmoon where he was born 72 years ago and resided all his life.  He was a Deacon of the first Baptist Church of that place.  Surviving are a son, Wellington S Philo; a brother, Basil Philo and several nephews and nieces.  The funeral will be conducted Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the First Baptist Church.  Burial will be in Union Cemetery, Crescent.

Thursday afternoon, Jul 13, occurred the death of Jennie Smith, beloved wife of Merritt Philo, after a long illness. Mrs Philo received a stroke of paralysis about two years ago in Frear's Dry Goods Store and has been in poor health since that time. She was a consistent member of the Halfmoon Baptist Church and was highly esteemed by all who knew her. She is survived by her husband and one son, Wellington Philo, who have the heartfelt sympathy of their many friends. Her funeral was largely attended from her late residence Sunday afternoon. Rev F P Osborn officiated. Interment took place in the Crescent Union Cemetery, the following acting as bears: Ellis M Faulkner, Byron Wetsel, Irving L Taylor and Chas H Rice.

Wellington Philo Dies Suddenly At Halfmoon Home
Body Found on Kitchen Floor; Had Suffered from Heart Ailment
Wellington S Philo, 58, was found dead on the kitchen floor of his home in Halfmoon about 8 pm yesterday. He lived alone. Philo had not been seen since about noon Monday.  Neighbors looking through a window discovered him on the floor. They notified State Police of the Newtonville outpost of Troop G.  Dr A W Johnson, Saratoga County Coroner, and Dr G W Crissey of Mechanicville, coroner's physician,, were summoned. Mr Philo, it is believe, had been dead about ten hours. The body was taken to the Hack funeral parlors at Mechanicville where an autopsy will be performed to determine the cause of death. State Police notified Mrs Mary Philo, RD 2, Mechanicville, an aunt of Mr Philo, of his death.  Following an autopsy, Dr Johnson said death was due to a heart attack and hardening of the coronary arteries.

Saturday evening, Feb 29, occurred the death of Herbert Philo, youngest son of Mr and Mrs Merritt N Philo in his 21st year of typhoid fever. Herbert was a genial, whole-souled fellow and was a great favorite among his young associates, and his death has cast a gloom over the whole village. He is survived by his parents and one brother, Wellington Philo, who in their great sorrow have the sympathy of the whole community. The funeral was held the following Tuesday afternoon at his parents' residence and was largely attended. Rev E E Manning officiated.  The choir consisting of Rev E E Manning, George Dunham, Miss Alice Manning and Miss Ethel Walker, sang, "Asleep in Jesus," "Under his Wing" and "Face to Face." Interment took place at Crescent. The large number of floral pieces peak of the high esteem in which he was held.

Wellington & Margaret Smith



Wellington H Smith, & Margaret A Smith were children of Hiram Smith & Phebe Ann Smith.  While Wellington married Phebe Jane Philo, the daughter Nehemiah Philo & Jane Ann Bancus, Margaret never married.

Wellington Smith, aged seventy-two years, died this morning at 6 o'clock at the home of his brother, Silas M Smith, East Line, after a short illness. Mr Smith was born in Halfmoon in 1852 where he spent the greater part of his life. He came to visit his brother recently for a few weeks when he took sick.  Besides his brother, Silas M Smith, his survivors are two nephews and three nieces. The funeral will take place Tuesday afternoon at 1 o'clock standard time at the home of his brother at East Line and burial will be in the Union Cemetery at Crescent.

After a long illness of Bright's Disease, Miss Maggie A Smith died at the home of her brother, Wellington Smith in Halfmoon, early yesterday morning. She is survived by one sister and two brothers, Mrs Merritt Philo of Halfmoon, Wellington Smith of Halfmoon and Silas Smith of East Line. Miss Smith had been a member of the Baptist Church of Halfmoon for many years.  The funeral will be held on Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the residence, and the Rev E Abbott of Clifton Park will officiate.

Some Samuel Smith Stock


In my last blog I wrote about Samuel P Smith & Mary E Earing who had 3 children – Bertha, Chester & Sylvia.  We know that Chester died young but his 2 sisters went on to marry and have families of their own.

Bertha Margaret Smith was born in 1876 and married William H Smith in 1898 – they had 3 children – Marville, Harold & Marie.

Funeral service Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock from her late residence, Albany-Shaker Road. Relatives and friends are invited. The home will be open Sunday evening from 7-9 o'clock. Born in Castleton, Mr Smith was a former druggist in that place for many years. He attended the Dutch Reformed Church there. Burial was in Castleton Cemetery. Survivors include the widow, Bertha M Smith; three children, Mrs Joseph Gritech, Menands; Harold S Smith, Shaker Road; and Mrs Kenneth J Sebast, Schenectady; also five grandchildren, Russell and Virginia Gritech, June and Alice Joy Smith, and James Kenneth Sebast.

K J Sebast Dies; at GE 27 Years
Kenneth J Sebast, 57, of Old State Road, a buyer in the wire mill department of the General Electric Co, died yesterday at St Clare's Hospital after a long illness. A native of Schenectady, Mr Sebast was employed at GE 27 years and was a member of the company Quarter Century Club. Mr Sebast was a member of the Princetown Reformed Church, Noah Lodge F and A M of Altamont and the Gifford Grange. Survivors include his widow, Mrs Marie E Smith Sebast; a son, James K Sebast of Middle Grove; a daughter, Mrs Barbara E Ogden of Woodstock; his parents, Mr and Mrs George Sebast, of Schenectady; and a brother, Earl Sebast also of Schenectady. Several nieces and nephews also survive. The funeral service will be held at the Princetown Reformed Church at 1030 am Friday. The Rev Harold Irish, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in Memory's Garden. The Bond Funeral Home will be open after 7 pm tomorrow. Memorial contributions may be made to the memorial fund of the Princetown Reformed Church

Slyvia Elwood Dies at 79 in Gloversville
Gloversille - Mrs Sylvia J Elwood, 79, of 24 Maple Avenue, widow of Lester Elwood, died early yesterday at the Grand Haven Nursing Home, where she was admitted Saturday. A native of East Fine, she had been a Gloversville resident for the past 41 years. She was a member of the North Main Street Methodist Church and its Guiding Star class.  Survivors are three daughters, Mrs Albertus Cornell and Miss Evelyn Elwood of Gloversville, and Mrs Colvin Jennings of Amsterdam; a sister Miss Marguerite Jennings of Castleton-on-the-Hudson; six grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Services will be held at 1 pm Thursday at the Clarence Brown Funeral Home. Rev Winston Saunders of the North Main Street Methodist Church will officiate. Interment will be in St Johnsville Cemetery in the spring.

Lester H Elwood, 70, of 24 Maple Avenue, Gloversville, died yesterday afternoon at his home following an illness of two months. He was born September 12, 1881, in the Town of Minden, a son of H Lansing and Martha Flanders Elwood. He resided to Gloversville for 23 years. The survivors are his wife, Mrs Sylvia Elwood; three daughters, Mrs Albertus Cornell, Gloversville, Mrs Colvin Jennings, Amsterdam, and Miss Evelyn Elwood, Gloversville; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and one niece. Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at 1 o'clock at the Clarence Brown Funeral Home, 301 North Main Street, Gloversville. Burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery, St Johnsville.

Mrs Bertha M Cornell, 58, of 12 Eagle Street, died at 915 last night at her home. She was born in St Johnsville, Nov 17, 1902, and had lived in Gloversville for the past 43 years. She was a member of the North Main Street Methodist Church. She is survived by two sons, John and David Cornell, both of Gloversville; one daughter, Miss Jean Cornell, Gloversville; two sisters, Miss Evelyn Elwood, Gloversville, and Mrs Colvin Jennings, Amsterdam; one grandson, several nieces and nephews.

Survivors are his wife, Mrs Bertha Cornell; two sons, John L Cornell and David A Cornell; one daughter, Miss Jean Cornell; one sister, Mrs Fred DeMagistris, all of Gloversville; also nieces and nephews.
